A couple from Pennsylvania have been accused of theft after going on a shopping spree when $120,000 was mistakenly deposited into their bank account.

Per news station, WNEP, Robert Williams and his wife, Tiffany, appeared in court last Tuesday after they spent two and half weeks working through the windfall, which they reportedly spent on bills, cars and cash purchases.

Both Robert, 36, and Tiffany, 35, were prosecuted on charges of theft and receiving stolen property.

State police said that BB&T Bank deposited the funds into the couple's account on the 31st May in a clerical error made by a staff member.

According to WNEP, by the 19th June, the Williams had spent the money on purchases which included an SUV, two four-wheelers, a car trailer, as well as bills, car repairs, and cash purchases. They also gave $15,000 to friends.

The Williamsport Sun-Gazette reports that on the 20th June, the bank contacted Tiffany about the error, notifying her that the money had been retrieved from their account, resulting in a $107,416 overdraft fee.

"She no longer had the funds because she had already paid off bills. She told the bank her husband had spent a great portion of the funds and purchased a four-wheeler," the publication detailed. "She said she would speak to her husband and attempt to construct a repayment agreement."

The bank then attempted to contact the couple, but were unable to reach them.

Neighbours of the Williams were surprised by the claims. "That is kind of shocking," Nate Weaver told WNEP. "With all the procedures the banks have set up, checking and double-checking and triple-checking, there's no way anybody gets away with that stuff."

Robert admitted to police officials in July that he and Tiffany had known the "mislaid money did not belong to them, but they spent it anyway."

The pair were arraigned on Tuesday, and were later released on a $25,000 bail.
