A couple in St Louis, Missouri has been filmed pointing guns at protesters in the city as the group marched toward the mayor's home to demand that she resign.

A video that circulated on social media shows the couple standing outside their large house in the upscale Central West End neighborhood of the city, pointing guns at passing protesters.

The incident took place as protesters marched toward Mayor Lyda Krewson’s home while chanting “Resign Lyda, take the cops with you," it has been reported.

"A couple has come out of their house and is pointing guns at protesters in their neighborhood," one Twitter user captioned a video of the incident.

Another tweet that displayed a video of the incident is captioned, "here’s what happens when you march on Portland Place in St. Louis, MO they’re scared of their own community."

Per CBS News and others, the calls for Mayor Krewson's resignation come following a Facebook Live briefing during which she read the names and addresses of numerous residents who had written letters to her suggesting she defund the police department.

The video was subsequently removed from Facebook, with Mayor Krewson issuing an apology, saying that she didn't "intend to cause distress."

A spokesperson for the mayor later told KMOV that she had no intention of resigning over the "mistake". They said, "She's apologized, acknowledges she made a mistake and has absolutely no intention of resigning,"

Though the names and letters are considered to be public record, Mayor Krewson's actions sparked an angry backlash, and a petition calling for her to resign has garnered more than 43,000 signatures.

St. Louis Alderwoman Megan Ellyia Green tweeted, "So not cool to doxx my constituents who support #DefundThePolice on your FB live. It's a move designed to silence dissent, and it's dangerous."

“As a leader, you don’t do stuff like that … it’s only right that we visit her at her home,” State Rep. Rasheen Aldridge, D-St. Louis, is reported to have said while speaking into a megaphone during the protest on Sunday.
