George Floyd's girlfriend had taught Daunte Wright when he was in high school, it has been revealed.
Per CBS News, Wright's aunt, Naisha Wright, revealed the tragic coincidence at a press conference on Tuesday.
"My nephew was 20 years old, 20 years old," she said, according to the outlet. "He was loved. He was ours."
Naisha Wright then pointed out the picture on her T-shirt - it was of George Floyd, who was also from Minneapolis. It contained the words: "I can't breathe."
She said: "The craziest thing is to find out today that my family has connections to this man, to this family. His girlfriend was a teacher for my nephew. My nephew was a lovable young man. His smile, oh lord, the most beautiful smile. Ya'll took that."
Watch Naisha's very emotional address at the press conference:Floyd's girlfriend Courteney Ross confirmed to the Washington Post that the 20-year-old had attended Edison High School while she was a dean. She described him as a "silly boy, as goofy as can be," and "needed a lot of love."
The educator said: "Students like Daunte needed more resources but they never got more resources.
"Our system doesn't serve kids like Daunte. And now I'm seeing, more than ever, this system I once believed in, we're done doing what we need to be doing to protect Black life."
Wright was fatally shot by Officer Kim Potter on Sunday (April 11), as trial of Derek Chauvin - the officer who knelt on Floyd's neck for more than nine minutes in May 2020 - takes place.
Watch Daunte Wright's mother's emotional account of her final FaceTime call with her son - just moments after the fatal shot:Wright sustained the fatal gunshot wound during a traffic stop. Brooklyn Center police in Minnesota have said it was an accident, per the BBC. They say the officer had intended to fire her taser in order to prevent Wright from escaping.
"It is my belief the officer meant to deploy their Taser but shot him with a single bullet," Police Chief Tim Gannon said, adding: "There's nothing I can say to lessen the pain."
Both Potter and Gannon have since resigned from their respective positions.
