Daunte Wright's family has called for a life sentence for ex-cop Kim Potter after she was charged with second-degree manslaughter earlier this week.

According to The Daily Mail, in a press conference held on Thursday, April 14, the mother of the 20-year-old victim of the police shooting stated:

"Justice isn’t even a word to me. The last few days everybody has asked me what we want, what do we wanna see happen?

"And everybody keeps saying ‘justice’ but unfortunately, there’s never gonna be justice for us."

She continued: "Justice would bring our son home to us, knocking on the door with his big smile.

"Coming in the house, sitting down and eating dinner with us, going out for lunch, playing with his one-year-old almost-two-year-old son, giving him a kiss before he walks out the door."

"Justice isn’t even a word to me. I do want accountability, 100% accountability."

The Mail reports that, following a speech from the young man's mother, Daunte's aunt, Naisha Wright, stated: "Can we get a conviction? Can we get something? Manslaughter?

"My brother and my sister need this woman to be convicted. If we could have life, we want life. We gotta go life without him."

Naisha also held up printed images of a taser and a glock 17 gun side-by-side, while asking those in attendance: "This is a taser, y’all see the difference? But no, my nephew was killed with this, a glock."

According to bodycam footage taken at the time of the shooting incident, Wright was shot on Sunday, April 11, after being pulled over while driving for an expired tag on his car's license plate.

When officers informed Wright that he was being arrested for an outstanding warrant, a scuffle ensued and Wright reentered the vehicle.

Officer Kimberly Potter allegedly mistook her firearm for her taser, drew her pistol, and opened fire, fatally wounding Wright.

Potter was taken into custody on the morning of Wednesday, April 14, and charged with second-degree manslaughter for her part in the shooting of Wright.

The 48-year-old was later released from the Hennepin County Jail on a $100,000 bail. If found guilty, the 26-year veteran cop faces a maximum prison sentence of 10 years and a $20,000 fine.

CNN reports that Brooklyn Center Mayor Mike Elliott confirmed in a press conference that Potter had resigned from the force, although he clarified that he had not officially accepted her resignation while the investigation is ongoing.
