During yesterday's historic inauguration, Vice President Kamala Harris maintained her signature look and wore a stunning pearl necklace. Now, its designer has opened up about the significant meaning behind the iconic piece of jewelry.

The 56-year-old made history on January 20 by becoming the first female and Black and South Asian American vice president.

Harris wore a purple dress and matching coat created by emerging designer Christopher John Rogers, and accessorized the look with a pearl necklace exclusively designed by Wilfredo Rosado.

Harris has previously worn pearls to pay homage to her Howard University sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha, and inauguration day was no exception.

Harper's Bazaar reports that the necklace was made up of 12 South Sea pearls that are separated by 11 diamonds, and it holds a meaning unique to Harris.

In an interview with BAZAAR.com, Rosado said: "The necklace has a few unifying themes; the gold chain link symbolizes strength, the pearl is representative of both femininity and resilience, and the diamonds add a hint of glamour that I felt was perfect for the occasion."

The designer explained that he was contacted by Harris' team back in September of 2020 and asked to create a piece of jewelry that would truly reflect everything Harris stands for.

"This is more than just a piece of jewelry," he says. "It represents a historical moment, pride in having the first woman named vice president of the United States and a new beginning for our country."

Per the Guardian, when the Democratic victory was announced last year, Harris made a point of saying that while she has made history, she is simply paving the way for other women to take on the role in the future.

"Because every little girl watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities and to the children of our country regardless of your gender, our country has sent you a clear message: Dream with ambition, lead with conviction and see yourselves in a way that others may not simply because they’ve never seen it before."
