A Pittsburgh Pirates fan who fell over the outfield wall and plummeted 21 feet onto the field during a home game last week has been identified as 20-year-old Kavan Markwood, a former college football player.

First responders were seen rushing to Markwood's aid after Markwood fell from the right-field bleachers above the 21-foot-high Clemente Wall during the seventh inning of the Pirates vs. Cubs game on Wednesday, April 30, at PNC Park in Pittsburgh.

Witnesses described the shocking scene as the young fan — who was shirtless at the time — was celebrating Andrew McCutchen’s go-ahead double and appeared to lose his balance over a three-foot-high railing.

“As he jumped out of his seat to celebrate, it appeared that he had his hands on the fence in front of us, which I had done several times during the game, as well. I think the momentum from him jumping up in his seat and the way he grabbed the rail just seemed like he catapulted himself over the railing,” said Amy Thompson, who was sitting next to Markwood at the game.

Video and photos from the stadium showed players immediately reacting to the fall, with Pirates shortstop Oneil Cruz pointing toward the area where Markwood had landed. Medical staff, police, and first responders rushed onto the field. The game paused for about 10 minutes as players took a knee in prayer.

“It’s extremely unfortunate. That’s an understatement,” said Pirates manager Derek Shelton. “Even though it's 350 feet away or whatever it is, the fact of how it went down and then laying motionless while a play’s going on, (Cubs manager) Craig (Counsell) saw it, I saw it, we both got out there, I think the umpires saw it unfortunately because of the way the ball kicked.”

“Truly hate what happened tonight,” McCutchen tweeted after the game. “Cant (sic) help but think about that guy, his family and friends. I pray tonight for him. Let us think about his loved ones and hug our families a little tighter tonight. I hope he pulls thru. May God Bless you all. Good night.”

From Critical to Hopeful: Family Shares Update

Markwood was taken to Allegheny General Hospital in critical condition. But by the weekend, his family said he was showing signs of improvement.

“I’m incredibly thankful to share that Kav is making remarkable progress: he was extubated this morning, was able to say my name, and even squeezed my hand,” said his sister, Taryn Markwood, in a public statement on Saturday. “These small victories are monumental for us.”

“While Kav’s journey is far from over, we are hopeful. Your continued prayers and positive thoughts are needed and cherished more than ever.”

“He still has a long way to go – he’s dealing with a broken neck, clavicle, and back so there are plenty of obstacles ahead,” wrote Jennifer Phillips, the organizer of a GoFundMe for his recovery, in an update on Monday.

Taryn went on to thank everyone involved in the response — from the first responders and medical staff, to Pirates and Cubs players, and the public who paused to pray and supported the family.

“To the first responders who acted swiftly and skillfully — thank you for rushing to my brother Kav’s side, stabilizing him, and ensuring he received the urgent medical care he so desperately needed," she said. "Your courage and professionalism made all the difference.

“To the Pirates and Cubs players, coaches, staff, and all who paused to take a knee in prayer during that tragic moment — your compassion did not go unnoticed. It brought a sense of unity and hope amidst the chaos.

“To everyone who has generously contributed to the GoFundMe set up for Kav — thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Your kindness and generosity mean more than words can convey.

“We are not alone, and for that, we are eternally grateful.”

Investigation Ongoing

The Pittsburgh Department of Public Safety is treating the incident as "accidental", ABC7 reports.
