On July 13, the former president of the United States was rushed off stage after gunfire was heard ringing through one of his campaign rallies in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Video footage from the event showed the 78-year-old being surrounded by security personnel after a bullet grazed his ear and sent him ducking for cover behind his podium.

He was rushed to a nearby medical facility where he was assessed while the authorities worked on finding out the details about the suspect, who was later identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks.

In the wake of the attack, several things have happened that have shifted the future of the United States, including Trump's arch-nemesis and political rival Joe Biden stepping down as the official representative for the Democratic Party.

Now, in a new interview with Fox News, the Republican nominee has revealed that the pair had a private phone call between them after the assassination attempt.

"He said, 'You’re lucky you turned to the right,'" Trump told Jesse Watters of his phone call with the 81-year-old president.

He then summarized his chat with Biden as a "nice conversation."

Elsewhere, the business tycoon stated that he refused orders to be carried off stage on a stretcher even though he was injured.

"They wanted to put me on a stretcher," Trump said, noting that they believed he had been hit in the abdomen. "They had a stretcher, and they wanted to put me on a stretcher. And I said, 'I’m not going on a stretcher.'"

This led to a "little argument" between himself and the FBI agents.

"I said, 'I’m telling you, I’m OK. I’m fine. I’m going to get up. I want to get up. I’m not going to be taken out on a stretcher,'" he continued before adding that despite his injury, he is feeling much better.

"We’re getting down to the small bandages, but it was a nasty one," Trump said of his wound.

And of course, it wouldn't be a Trump interview without him talking about his former rival's alleged "mental decline."

"I think somebody has to look at it," Trump explained to the host. "Look, you had people that lied to the American public. And I tell you what, you ought to take a look at his doctors, because his doctors keep giving him this wonderful report.

"I’m not a doctor, but I saw [Biden] the other day," the former president stated. "He was unable to get up the children's stairs going into Air Force One.

"His doctor says – I know all about his doctor, by the way – his doctor says he’s in good health. He’s not in good health. I don’t think he’s in good health," Trump also added.

On July 21, Biden stepped down as the representative for the Democratic Party after ongoing pressure from members within his own cabinet.

In a statement posted to X (formerly Twitter), he stated that it has been "the greatest honor of [his] life" to serve his country but he will be "standing down" and focussing his attention on "fulfilling [his] duties" as president in the final leg of his time in power.

Biden, as well as other notable Democratic leaders, have now endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the new Democratic nominee.
