Donald Trump will be charged in connection with an investigation into a $130,000 payment made to adult film star Stormy Daniels seven years ago, BBC News reports.

As such, the 76-year-old will be the first US president to be hit with criminal charges, according to the outlet.

The former POTUS - who will be charged by New York authorities - is alleged by Daniels to have had an extramarital affair with her.

Per Sky News, following a nearly five-year investigation into Trump, the Manhattan District Attorney's office has submitted damning evidence to a New York grand jury. Said evidence reveals that Trump's lawyer Michael Cohen paid Daniels $130,000 towards the end of the former TV personality's 2016 presidential campaign.

Prosecutors claim that the money was sent in exchange for her silence regarding the alleged affair.

While this in itself is not illegal, when the former The Apprentice host reimbursed Cohen, the record for the payment stated it was for legal fees. According to the prosecution in this case, this means Trump had falsified business records, which is a criminal act in New York - classified as a misdemeanor.

Trump vehemently denies the allegations of a cheating scandal and has accused Daniels of fabricating the story.

In any case, it was previously reported by BBC News that prosecutors may claim that Trump's actions broke election law, as his wanting to keep his payments to Daniels under the radar was a result of not wanting potential voters to know he had - according to prosecutors - been romantically or sexually involved with her.

Attempting to cover up a criminal act by falsifying records would be classed as a felony - a more serious charge than a misdemeanor.

On March 20, Trump took to his social media platform Truth Social to slam what he referred to as "fake news" as part of a video post.

Take a look at the clip:

In the video, he described the investigations into his conduct as the "most disgusting witchhunt in the history of our country."

"These four horrible radical left Democrat investigations of your all time, favorite president – me – is just a continuation of the most disgusting witchhunts in the history of our country," he went on.

"It’s an absolute disgrace. Whether its the Mar-a-Lago raid, the unselect-Committee hoax, the perfect Georgia phone call that was absolutely perfect, or the Stormy ‘horseface’ Daniels extortion plot... They’re all sick and it’s fake news."

Trump previously took to Truth Social to call on his supporters to stage protests against the potential indictment.

"THE FAR & AWAY LEADING REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE & FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, WILL BE ARRESTED ON TUESDAY OF NEXT WEEK," Trump wrote on Saturday morning, per CNBC. "PROTEST, TAKE OUR NATION BACK!"
