Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize alongside his deputy Avi Berkowitz.

The pair received the nomination from one of the former US president's lawyers for the role they played in negotiating the "Abraham Accords" – four normalization deals between Israel and Arab nations.

Per Sky News, the deals were announced between August and December 2020 and are viewed as the most significant diplomatic breakthroughs in the Middle East in a quarter of a century.

Alan Dershowitz, the lawyer who nominated the pair, previously defended Trump during his first impeachment trial.

Dershowitz also cited the work of former US ambassador to Israel, David Friedman, and former Israeli ambassador to the United States, Ron Dermer, in the normalization deals in his letter to the Nobel committee.

He seemingly acknowledged that Kushner's nomination could be controversial by stressing that "the Nobel Peace Prize is not for popularity."

Dershowitz added: "Nor is it an assessment of what the international community may think of those who helped bring about peace. It is an award for fulfilling the daunting criteria set out by Alfred Nobel in his will."

After news of the nomination broke, Twitter went into meltdown.

One Twitter user wrote: "Alan Dershowitz nominating Jared Kushner for a Nobel Peace Prize is like Hannibal Lecter nominating Jeffrey Dahmer for a Michelin Star."

A second added: "Alan Dershowitz out here continuing to do Alan Dershowitz things by nominating dead eye slumlord millionaire Jared Kushner for the Nobel Peace Prize. Unclear if Dershowitz was wearing underwear at the time."

A third joked: "Nobel Prize nominee Jared Kushner, preparing to ask Professor Slughorn how horcruxes [sic] work."

A fourth wrote: "Jesus.H.Christ! The coffee nearly came down my nose when I read that Jared Kushner has been nominated for the Nobel peace prize! Mind you, he was nominated by Trump's lawyer so maybe there's still a chance that he'll also be nominated for jail time."

Meanwhile, a fifth simply added: "I can think of approximately 81 million people who deserve the Nobel Peace Prize before Jared Kushner."

Sky News reports that Kushner, 40, responded to the nomination in a statement saying that he was honored to receive the nomination, which will be awarded in October.
