At least eight people have been killed after a gunman opened fire at a FedEx facility in Indianapolis.

As reported by NBC, the shootings occurred shortly after 11:00PM on Thursday (April 15), with officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department arriving on the scene to an active shooter incident.

Police spokeswoman Officer Genae Cook later told the press that the gunman killed himself at the scene.

Multiple other injured casualties were transported to a nearby hospital.

No law enforcement officers were injured in the incident, the Guardian reports.

Speaking at an early morning conference on Friday, Cook confirmed that police found eight people (excluding the gunman) dead with gunshot wounds.

A motive for the attack is still yet to be determined, and it is unknown whether or not the shooter was an employee of the FedEx facility. Cook confirmed that an investigation has begun.

"We are aware of the tragic shooting at our FedEx Ground facility near the Indianapolis airport," a spokesperson for FedEx said.

"Safety is our top priority, and our thoughts are with all those who are affected. We are working to gather more information and are cooperating with investigating authorities."

Witness Jeremiah Miller told WISH-TV: "I saw a man with a submachine gun of some sort, an automatic rifle, and he was firing in the open."

ABC News reports that family members of workers at the facility have gathered in a nearby hotel in order to wait for updates on loved ones.

Some employees at the facility are reportedly not permitted to have their cellphones with them during their shift - meaning they have been unable to contact anyone.

Per gunviolencearchive.org, there have been 147 mass shootings in the US in 2021. These include last month's high-profile shootings in Atlanta and Boulder.
