A Florida man allegedly killed his wife and shot his stepdaughter before taking his own life following an argument over an NFL game.
According to Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, speaking at a press conference, Jason Kenney, 47, took his own life hours after killing his wife, Crystal Kenney on December 22, per the New York Post.
Judd said the killing too place after Crystal Kenney suggested that her husband turn off Monday’s NFL game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Indianapolis Colts, sending Jason - who had been drinking - into a rage.
When the argument escalated, Crystal told her 12-year-old son to call 911, and the boy ran to a neighbor's home when he heard gunshots.
Officers who responded to the call found Crystal dead and a 13-year-old girl suffering a gunshot wound to the shoulder and face.
The Sheriff called her survival "a Christmas miracle" after one of the two bullets she was struck by hit the bridge of her nose and went through and exited the top of her head.
The child is critical but stable in hospital.
Judd said: "She said, 'I begged him, don’t shoot me, don’t shoot me, don’t shoot me, and he shot me anyway.'"
The boy was unharmed, as was the couple's one-year-old daughter who was in the property at the time of the shooting, and was found asleep in her crib by deputies.
Judd said that Jason Kenney fled after the shooting, calling his sister who lives in upstate New York, to tell her he'd "done something very, very bad" and inform her that it would be the last time that they would ever speak, adding: "The next time you see me will be on the news."
Kenney then drove to his father's home where he was found by deputies, and fatally shot himself as they attempted to get him to come out of a shed.
When officers searched the family home, they found a note Crystal had written to her husband in which she urged him to get help for drug and alcohol abuse.
Judd said the note stated: "You’re drinking, you’re using cocaine again. This is not the way the family should be. You need God."
The children are now in the custody of their grandparents following their parents' deaths.
Judd said: "The entire family was destroyed. Our homicide detectives are distraught. When you go in there, there is a beautiful Christmas tree with lots of Christmas presents under it, just like the nuclear family should be."
