An elderly woman has tragically died after being killed by alligators at a Florida country club.

As reported by ABC News, the incident unfolded shortly before 8:00PM on Friday (July 15) at the Boca Royale Golf and Country Club in Englewood, Florida.

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office reports that the woman lived nearby to the golf course and after falling into a pond she "struggled to stay afloat".

She was then attacked by two alligators, with police saying in their statement: "While in the water two alligators were observed near the victim and ultimately grabbed her while in the water."

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. She has not yet been identified by authorities.

As part of the investigation, the sheriff's office says that an alligator trapper was dispatched from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and removed two alligators from the pond.

The alligators measured 8-foot-10-inches and 7-foot-7-inches respectively, per the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The agency has not been able to confirm whether or not the two alligators were the same ones responsible for the woman's death, but no further animals are due to be removed from the pond at this time.

Although fatal alligator attacks are rare, this incident comes weeks after the body of Sean McGuinness was found in a park in Largo, Florida. The Independent reports that the 47-year-old's body was missing three limbs when it was found at the lake.

Officials currently believe that McGuinness was attacked by an alligator after attempting to retrieve a frisbee.
