Amateur online detectives believe a new image being circulated online could be that of Brian Laundrie.
Laundrie has been the subject of a nationwide manhunt since he went missing about two weeks ago. His parents told investigators that they hadn't seen their 23-year-old son, whom they lived with, since September 14.
They said he told them he was going for a hike in a Florida nature reserve - but never returned.
Authorities have been investigating leads and potential sightings of Laundrie, who was named a person of interest in his fiancée Gabby Petito's disappearance before she was found dead at a campsite about 20 miles north of Jackson, Wyoming.
Online sleuths have now latched onto the high-profile case and are claiming that certain images featuring men who resemble the 23-year-old, per The Sun.
Most recently, a photo supposedly taken at a restaurant in Mexico is being shared on social media, with those sharing the image speculating that Laundrie fled to Mexico from his home in Florida.
One person wrote: "This is the ONLYYY #BrianLaundrie sighting so far that I’ve thought even REMOTELY looks like him. I put them side by side.
"This was taken in Mexico. Look at the ears. Look at the foreheads. Curved and then FLAT. The forehead rlly matches to me. Remember angles are different, too."
It is not known when the image was taken.
Another wrote: "This new speculation with the recent #BrianLaundrie sighting in Mexico seems to have the most resemblance of the rest out there right now…might be a stretch but is that a backpack at his feet and could it resemble the one he has? #gabbypetitio."
A third said: "#BrianLaundrie what about this photo from a restaurant in Mexico? It sure looks like the same kind of clothes he is always wearing and it seems as tho the same backpack we keep seeing is at his feet here...#JusticeForGabby."
While Laundrie has not been formally charged in connection with his fiancée's disappearance, he has been charged with illegal bank card use, per The Guardian.
He was indicted by a federal grand jury last week for allegedly using a Capital One Bank card that he was not authorized to use, spending more than $1,000 after Petito's death.
