On May 25, On May 25, 19-year Minneapolis police veteran Derek Chauvin was accompanied by officer Tou Thao and rookie cops J. Alexander Kueng and Thomas Lane in the arrest of 46-year-old George Floyd over an alleged counterfeit $20 bill.

Bodycam footage later emerged showing Chauvin on the back of George's neck for nearly nine minutes, calling him to lose consciousness. Following the arrest, Floyd was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Speaking last night (Monday, August 17), Philonise told viewers that it was "up to us to carry on the fight for justice".

"My brother, George, was selfless. He always made sacrifices for his family, friends, and even complete strangers.

"George had a giving spirit - a spirit that has shown up on streets around our nation and around the world.

"People of all races, all ages, all genders, all backgrounds, peacefully protesting in the name of love and unity is a fitting legacy for our brother.

The brothers then adamantly said: "George should be alive today. Breonna Taylor should be alive today. Ahmaud Arbery should be alive today. Eric Garner should be alive today. Stephon Clark, Atatiana Jefferson, Sandra Bland - they should all be alive today. So it's up to us to carry on the fight."

Philonise then added that he wanted honor those lost to "hate and injustice", as he instructed viewers: "Let's make sure we never stop saying their names."

George Floyd was the oldest of five children, leaving behind his two brothers and two sisters, Zsa Zsa and LaTonya.

Following his brother's tragic passing, Philonise has assumed the role of family spokesman.

On June 10, he testified in front of Congress, and asked lawmakers:

"I am asking you, is that what a black man's life is worth? Twenty dollars?

"This is 2020. Enough is enough. The people marching in the streets are telling you, enough is enough."

Floyd's death sparked mass protests - some peaceful, some violent - across the US and in major cities across the world, as people gathered to call out the systemic injustices carried out against black people - not least seen by the recent deaths of Floyd, but also that of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and more.

As well as a call for justice, these ongoing protests are also demanding an end to police brutality and the racism that is so deeply entrenched in America and the western world.

The message is simple: Black lives matter.
