Former US president George W. Bush has released a powerful video message to the people of America, calling for unity and an end of partisan.

The George W. Bush Presidential Center posted the professionally produced video across social media on Saturday, as Bush described the pandemic as a "challenging and solemn time", and urged Americans to practice "service and sacrifice".

In the three-minute clip  - entitled 'The Call to Unite' - Bush says:

"Let us remember how small our differences are in the face of this shared threat. In the final analysis, we are not partisan combatants. We are human beings, equally vulnerable and equally wonderful in the sight of God."

The former leader also reminded the US public that the impact of COVID-19 will not hit people equally, and it is up to the American spirit to reach out and help those in need.

Bush said: "In the days to come, it will be especially important to care in practical ways for the elderly, the ill and the unemployed."

The former president also urged people to follow safety measures and protect others from infection.

On Twitter, some people praised the former president, with some taking a swipe at the current president Donald Trump in the process.

One person tweeted: "Nicely done, hearkening back to the days when Americans could count on their presidents for leadership, inspiration, and solace. If Trump were smart, he'd be taking notes. But Trump is not smart. Godspeed, President Bush."

While another added: "God bless him. A reminder that every single president was better than the current one."

Gun safety advocate Fred Guttenberg added: "Please listen to every word of this message from our former President George W. Bush. What a thoughtful and inspiring message. This is how a leader speaks and what a leader says."

British journalist Mehdi Hasan said: "I defer to no one in my loathing for George W Bush - who one day I hope will face justice for his lies, war crimes, and torture! - but... and there is a ‘but,’ sorry...

"...can you imagine Donald Trump putting out a message or video like this? Can you??"

Others simply could not find merit in Bush's words following his own history as US president.
