Ghislaine Maxwell’s lawyer has claimed that her jail cell is flooded with raw sewage and that she's being denied water by prison guards.
The alleged madame of Jeffrey Epstein was moved from her jail cell after the sewage was discovered, The Sun reports, but she is still living without necessities like water, her legal team argued on Tuesday, June 15.
Maxwell's attorney Bobbi Sternheim wrote in a Tuesday night filing that the 59-year-old is being held in a cell at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, despite the discovery of raw sewage.
Sternheim said that despite Maxwell's meetings with her lawyers being confidential, corrections officers have uninhibited access to them and her legal papers.
The attorney complained that both Maxwell and her lawyers were not permitted to have any water during their four-hour meeting on Sunday, June 13.
Despite there allegedly being numerous complaints about how Maxwell is being treated, "little if anything has been done," according to her lawyer.
The 59-year-old is accused of grooming young women with her former partner Epstein, who died in 2019 while being held in jail for sex trafficking charges.
"The ever-changing rules are negatively impacting Ms. Maxwell's ability to prepare for trial," the letter reads.
"The hyper-surveillance of Ms. Maxwell and counsel during legal visits is highly inappropriate and invasive."
The counter prosecutors wrote in a June 7 letter that while jail guards can watch Maxwell conversing with her lawyers, they can not hear what is being said.
According to prosecutors, Maxwell is given more time than other inmates to review evidence online and meet with her lawyers.
Reuters reports that Maxwell remains "physically healthy".
News of Maxwell's legal team objecting to her treatment in prison comes after she was denied bail for a fifth time earlier this month, The Guardian reports.
Maxwell was taken into police custody in July of last year, and Maxwell's attorney David Oscar Markus says, according to the paper, that she has been "subjected to more grueling conditions than any other inmate."
He added: "This is due to the Epstein effect. Because Epstein died on the jail's watch, it has decided to torture Ghislaine. That's wrong."
