A Michigan groom has spoken directly to his victim’s family after being sentenced for killing his best friend during celebrations on his wedding day.
James Shirah was sentenced at Genesee County court on Monday, May 11, over the death of Terry Taylor Jr, who died on August 30, 2024, following an incident at a residential property after Shirah’s wedding.
According to Court TV, police previously said: “After the wedding [Taylor] was involved in an argument, which led to him being intentionally struck by a large SUV that was traveling at a high rate of speed.”
Prosecutors argued Shirah left the property after an argument with Taylor before returning and striking him with the SUV. Shirah’s defense claimed the incident was not intentional.
Last month, Shirah pleaded no contest and was also ordered to pay $334 in fines and court costs, according to MLive.
Shirah received a sentence of 30 to 45 years for second-degree murder. He was also sentenced to 10 to 15 years for failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in death and driving on a suspended, revoked or denied license.
During sentencing, Shirah addressed Taylor’s family directly and said: "The only thing I can do for the rest of my life is express my apology and remorse... I will forever be sorry."
He also told the court: "It was not intentional. That was my best friend... I accept full responsibility for my actions that night."
His attorney, Harrell Milhouse, described the incident as a situation between close friends that escalated. Speaking via Court TV, he said: "This is a situation where you have friends lifelong friends, best friends and things get out of control."
Judge Khary Hanible told Shirah during sentencing: “Mr. Shirah, I believe that you are not a criminal. You are, however, a killer."
Shirah’s bride, Savahna Collier, pleaded guilty last month to one count of accessory after the fact to a felony.
She is expected to be sentenced within the next few weeks.
Taylor’s cousin, Eren Taylor, also delivered a statement in court about the aftermath of the incident.
She said: “When I got to him, all I could see was blood. I hope that they throw the book at you."
A GoFundMe page created for Taylor described him as “an amazing person” and said: "So many people love him. This was completely unexpected and a lot of lives are effected by this loss. If anyone could donate anything helps even if it's only a dollar or two."
The fundraiser has raised more than $3,000 so far.
