A Massachusetts teen's final plea for help has surfaced in court just days after her remains were found buried in her boyfriend’s backyard.
Kylee Monteiro, 18, was three months pregnant when she disappeared on August 7. Two weeks later, police made a devastating discovery—and arrested her boyfriend, 22-year-old Gregory Groom, per ABC News.
Groom has now been charged with murder, assault and battery on a pregnant victim, aggravated intimidation of a witness, and additional domestic violence-related charges. He pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in Taunton District Court on Wednesday, August 20.
“If I die it was Greg.”
During the hearing, prosecutor Jason Mohan revealed that Groom initially reported Kylee missing on August 8, claiming she had come to his home after leaving a residential program and wanted to stay with him. That’s also when she allegedly told him she was pregnant with his child.
According to Mohan, the two got into an argument over where Kylee would stay. Shortly after, she sent a chilling text to her sister that was read aloud in court (via CBS): “He threw me on the ground and pulled my hair and strangled me. My phones at 4 percent, if I die it was Greg.”
That message would be the last time anyone heard from her.
Grim Discovery in the Backyard
Following his arrest, Groom was questioned again and reportedly admitted to pushing Kylee during their fight, claiming she hit her head. But the story didn’t stop there.
Investigators say Groom was then asked where her body was buried. He allegedly drew a crude map of his property, showing police the location of her remains. Authorities discovered a patch of freshly disturbed dirt in his backyard and began to dig.
According to Mohan, Groom later confessed to killing Kylee during the argument—stabbing her three times with a kitchen knife: once in the chest and twice in the neck.
An autopsy is currently pending to confirm the cause of death. Kylee’s body has been recovered from the location Groom pointed out.
Legal Proceedings Continue
Groom is being held without bail and is scheduled to return to court for a probable cause hearing on September 10.
If convicted, he faces a long list of charges tied to both Kylee’s death and the unborn child’s. Prosecutors made it clear that the case carries significant weight given the brutality and the evidence presented so far.
