Hunter Biden, the son of president-elect Joe Biden, has revealed that he is under investigation over his tax affairs.

As reported by BBC News, the investigation is being carried out in Delaware by federal prosecutors. It is reportedly in connection with business dealings that involve other countries such as China.

Hunter Biden, 50, insists that he has done nothing wrong and that the investigation will confirm this.

The Biden-Harris transition team said the president-elect was "deeply proud of his son".

A statement from the team said Hunter had "fought through difficult challenges, including the vicious personal attacks of recent months, only to emerge stronger".

Hunter Biden had found out about the investigation earlier this week on Tuesday (December 8). He did not reveal any additional details.

"I take this matter very seriously but I am confident that a professional and objective review of these matters will demonstrate that I handled my affairs legally and appropriately, including with the benefit of professional tax advisers," he said, per the BBC.

The investigation reportedly began in 2018 before his father had announced he would be running for president.

Hunter Biden was often criticized by Republicans for his business dealings in China and Ukraine when Joe Biden was vice-president from 2008 to 2016.

In December 2019, President Donald Trump was impeached by the Democratic-led House of Representatives for alleged abuse of power and obstruction of Congress due to his pressuring of Ukraine to investigate the Bidens

Trump was acquitted by the Republican-run Senate in February.

The investigation involving Hunter Biden coincides with the president-elect choosing his nominees for the cabinet.

This means when Joe Biden, 78, enters the White House next month, his nominee for attorney general could potentially be overseeing the investigation.

Per the BBC, there have been hints that such an investigation into Hunter Biden's tax affairs would come about.

While many might assume President Donald Trump was behind the investigation, the US attorney overseeing it, David Weiss of Delaware, has not only worked as a prosecutor when Republicans have been in office.

Indeed, he also worked as a deputy in the office, and as interim US attorney, when former Democratic president Barack Obama was in office.
