Hunter Biden, son of US President Joe Biden, is reportedly set to plead guilty to two misdemeanour charges relating to tax crimes and illicit firearm possession as a drug user, following a five-year-long investigation.

The details of the case, initially disclosed by NBC News, have been shaped by an examination of funds Hunter Biden received from foreign business interests.

A plea agreement has been filed by the US Attorney in Delaware, marking the potential end of this lengthy inquiry into the president's son.

As per a report by the New York Post, Hunter Biden made a public statement regarding the investigation into his "tax affairs" by the Delaware US Attorney’s Office soon after his father's victorious 2020 presidential campaign. The office is currently helmed by David Weiss.

Last month, numerous media outlets reported that Weiss was on the verge of making a decisive move in the case, following meetings between the first son’s legal team and officials from the Justice Department in late April.

Hunter Biden is predicted to accept drug treatment and monitoring as part of the agreement. The terms, designed to avoid a prison sentence, still require a judge's approval.

The agreement was agreed to by US Attorney David Weiss - who was nominated by President Donald Trump back in 2018 - and is set to bring an close to the five-year investigation, which has involved federal prosecutors, FBI agents, and IRS officials.

It remains uncertain when Hunter Biden will appear in court to formally enter his guilty plea.

In response to the news, a spokesperson from the White House has released the following brief statement: "The President and First Lady love their son and support him as he continues to rebuild his life.

"We will have no further comment."
