Husband of missing American ‘previously threatened to throw her overboard’ as chilling voice note revealed
A missing woman’s disappearance has taken a disturbing turn, with her husband now facing allegations that he had previously "threatened to throw her overboard," along with claims of a haunting voicemail sent after she vanished.
Lynette Hooker, 55, of Onsted, Michigan, reportedly fell into the waters of the Abaco Islands in the Bahamas on Saturday (April 4) while boating with her husband, Brian Hooker, 58.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force is investigating the woman's disappearance along with the US Coast Guard, the Royal Bahamas Defense Force, and Hope Town Fire & Rescue.
The couple, who have been married for about 25 years, have been sailing together for more than a decade, regularly sharing snippets of their adventures on sea on Instagram, under the handle: "The sailing hookers".
Lynette’s daughter, Karli Aylesworth, said her mom "loves exploring" and that the trip had been a long-held dream for the pair.
As the search for Lynette has turned into a recovery mission, Aylesworth fears the worst.
"The more time that goes on, the more I disbelieve that she will come back alive. I don’t think that you can tread water for that long," she told CNN. "But I hope maybe she’s on a little island somewhere."
Daughters Reveals Haunting Voicemail
According to police, Lynette was on a 2.5-mile journey when she went overboard. She had the vessel's keys, which caused the engine to shut off when she fell, The Independent reported.
Her husband told officials that strong currents carried her away, and he lost sight of her. He then paddled the 8-foot dinghy to Marsh Harbour Boat Yard, arriving at 4AM on Sunday (April 5), where he reported the incident, per CNN.
Aylesworth, who isn't related to Brian, revealed that she received a voice note that she received from her mom's husband.
"Hello, honey, it’s Dad. I just got a call from Hope Town Search and Rescue, and they found the flotation device that I threw to Mom when she fell overboard," he reportedly said, cited by The New York Post.
Claims of Past Violence
Aylesworth has also alleged to Fox News that Brian has a history of being violent towards her mother.
"I do believe something might have happened to her," she told the outlet. "There's history of them choking her out and threatening to throw her overboard. So the fact that this is actually happening makes me believe there's more to the story."
The heartbroken daughter said the man's behavior would change when he was drinking alcohol. "He starts to act more smart-a**y and more picking at you and like 'I know this will irritate you so I'm gonna do that' type of attitude," she said.
She added that her mom is a "very fit person" who wouldn't lose her balance on a boat.
"I'm confused why she has the keys because she never drove the dinghy. It was always Brian. So the story just doesn't add up right now," she said.
A criminal investigation hasn’t been opened, and Brian hasn’t been charged with any crime and hasn’t commented on the allegations.
Aylesworth’s comments come just a day after she called for a more thorough probe involving US authorities.
"I have been privy to very little information. My sole concern is to find out what happened to my mother and make sure a full and complete investigation is performed into her disappearance," she said, per Daily Mail.
"While the Royal Bahamian police are investigating this matter, I would also appreciate any involvement of the federal, state or local authorities to look into the circumstances of this tragic situation," she added.
Geoff Fahringer, a former dive team member for the Collier County Sheriff's Office in Florida, said that he doesn't suspect foul play.
"Sadly, what I've seen in my experience is that this is unfortunately a somewhat common occurrence that seeing the circumstances of this entire accident, it's something I've seen before," Fahringer said.
The US State Department has urged Americans to "exercise increased caution" when travelling to the Bahamas.
