Jill Biden has responded to certain commentators after she was criticized for wearing a pair of black patterned stockings.
The 69-year-old First Lady discussed the controversial fashion choice - that some people mistakingly referred to dismissively as "fishnets" - back in April of 2021, in a recent cover interview with Vogue alongside her Presidential husband.
In the interview in question, the FLOTUS stated: "It's kind of surprising, I think, how much commentary is made about what I wear or if I put my hair in a scrunchie. I put my hair up! Or the stocking thing.
"It's amazing how much people pay attention to every little detail. And they weren't fishnets. They weren't lace. They were very pretty stockings."
Per The New York Post, a number of social media users previously disparaged the First Lady's choice of hosiery as inappropriate after she was pictured wearing the tights when disembarking from a plane from California at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland earlier this year.
For instance, one Twitter user wrote: "Jill Biden Wore a Pair of Fishnet Tights. She's too old to be dressing like that, especially for being the first lady. she's not dressing at all. #fishnets #JillBiden [sic]"
Another critic wrote: "Madonna called and wants her trashy look back, Doc."
Someone else stated: "They might be expensive but she looks trashy as heck dressed like that. What an embarrassment of 1st lady. Between joe and her we are the laughing stock of the world. [sic]"
However, a number of other people defended the First Lady's fashion statement, with one Twitter user writing:
"Lmao all the pearl-clutching Christians mad at Dr Jill Biden for wearing fishnets — those aren’t fishnets, they’re patterned, gorgeous tights and she is serving major Moira Rose vibes soooo idk what you’re afraid of. #JillBiden [sic]"
Another person tweeted: "#FLOTUS Dr. Jill Biden looks fantastic! Call them fishnets or patterned stockings, whatever, she looks great. I wish I could pull off that look, and I'm several years younger than her! [sic]"
Finally, someone else stated: "Apparently people are mad that Jill Biden wore 'fishnets.' These are not even fishnets, people. They’re just patterned tights. Grow up."
