Jill Biden has branded concerns about her husband's mental fitness "ridiculous" in a new interview with CBS Sunday Morning.

Speaking to host Rita Braver, the 70-year-old first lady repeatedly backed her husband of 44 years when asked about recent polls that show some US citizens have called into question the 79-year-old president's fitness.

As reported by The Hill, she proceeded to shake her head when Braver stated that polls show "quite a few Americans have some questions about the president's current mental fitness."

"I think that's ridiculous," Dr. Biden told Braver, as per an excerpt of the interview published by CBS News yesterday.

The first lady's support for her husband comes after a Politico/Morning Consult poll published last month found that 46% of US citizens believe that Biden is mentally fit for office, however, 48% think he is mentally unfit.

In the same poll, about half of the participants believed Biden is not "in good health."

Since Joe Biden became a candidate for presidency, Republicans have sought to discredit him, citing his supposed age-related mental unfitness.

Biden, who is the oldest person to take office, turned 79 on November 20. The day before the big day, he underwent a routine physical examination, with the results stating that he is in good health and fit for presidency.

Elsewhere in her interview with CBS Sunday Morning, Mrs. Biden opened up about her own experience of becoming first lady, explaining that the job is "24 hours a day".

When asked if she was prepared for how her life would change in the White House, Biden told Braver: "I think it's a little harder than I imagined. It's not like a job that you do; it's a lifestyle that you live, and it's not something you leave at 5:00 or at 3:00 … it's 24 hours a day."

President Biden joined his wife later in the interview, which took place at the White House, and was asked how it has benefitted him being able to share the experience with his longtime partner.

"I’m a lucky man," he said. "Jill is the life of my love and the love of my life."
