Jimmy Carter pays tribute to wife of 77 years Rosalynn after her death at 96

The United States is mourning the loss of Rosalynn Carter, former First Lady, who passed away at the age of 96 on Sunday.

The former First Lady's death was announced by The Carter Center two days after she entered hospice care at her home in Plains, Georgia. Rosalynn Carter's remarkable life leaves an enduring legacy of mental health advocacy and compassionate service, deeply felt by her family and the nation, The Independent reports.

Her husband of over seven decades, former President Jimmy Carter, 99, who is also in hospice care, paid a heartfelt tribute to his lifelong partner. “Rosalynn was my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished,” he said in a statement released by The Carter Center.

“She gave me wise guidance and encouragement when I needed it. As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew somebody loved and supported me," the heartfelt statement continued.

Chip Carter, one of the couple’s four children, highlighted his mother's impactful life, saying: “Besides being a loving mother and extraordinary First Lady, my mother was a great humanitarian in her own right. Her life of service and compassion was an example for all Americans.”

Rosalynn Carter's passing has also drawn tributes from across the political spectrum, underscoring her broad influence and respect. President Joe Biden, remembering her as a "dear friend", praised her inspiring journey. "First Lady Rosalynn Carter walked her own path, inspiring a nation and the world along the way," Biden expressed in a tweet.

"On behalf of a grateful nation, we send our love to the entire Carter family and the countless people whose lives are better, fuller, and brighter because of Rosalynn Carter," the current POTUS added.

Former President Donald Trump also honored her, acknowledging her nearly a century-long journey of dedication and national service. "Over a life spanning nearly a century, Rosalynn Carter earned the admiration and gratitude of our entire nation," Trump said. He recalled her various roles - from a US Navy spouse to her tenure as First Lady and her significant work at the Carter Center and volunteering with Habitat for Humanity.

Melania Trump, the wife of Donald Trump, shared her remembrances as well, highlighting Rosalynn Carter's unwavering commitment to her family and country. "Rosalynn Carter leaves behind a meaningful legacy not only as First Lady but as a wife and mother," Melania tweeted. "We will always remember her servant’s heart and devotion to her husband, family, and country. May she rest in peace."

In September, Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter made a rare public appearance together at a peanut festival in Plains, Georgia -  marking their final public outing as a couple. Their union, spanning over 70 years, was blessed with four children and 22 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, a testament to their enduring love and partnership.
