People point out major problem with Trump's ambitious plan to rename Pacific or Atlantic 'Trump Ocean'
People have pointed out that there's a pretty big flaw in Donald Trump's plan to name an ocean after himself.
If there's one thing that's become something of a theme during Donald Trump's second term in office, it's that he seems to enjoy renaming things after himself.
From the President Donald J. Trump ballroom, which is being constructed at the White House, to renaming the Kennedy Center to be the Trump Kennedy Center, and even adding his name to the Institute of Peace, he certainly does like to leave his mark.
After also renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, and Lake Ontario as Lake America, Trump has set his sights on renaming an ocean.
He has said that the Atlantic or the Pacific Ocean should be renamed “Trump Ocean” or “Ocean of the Americas”.
Speaking at a rally in Clarksville, Tennessee on Saturday, Trump said: "We’ve got the gulf. We’ve got a beautiful lake. Now, somebody said, you need a river.
"We need a river. We need an ocean. We’ll call it ‘Trump Ocean’ or ‘Ocean of the Americas’, something like that.
"Before I get out, I think we should have an ocean. And we need a great river."
Trump made the decision to change the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America in August after trade talks with Canada broke down.
He said at the time, before signing the executive order: "We’re going to be changing the name of Lake Ontario effective immediately to Lake America."
While Ottawa is not forced to accept the new name for the Great Lake, which runs between New York state and the Canadian province of Ontario, but both Google and Apple maps display the name as Lake America to users in the US.
Trump said: "The lake change, Lake of America, was something I’ve been thinking about for a long time, actually.
"We took something called the Gulf of Mexico, we changed it, and now it’s very routinely the Gulf of America.
"So, if you think about it, we have a gulf and we have a lake. Now all we need is an ocean. So, maybe we’ll have to change the name of the Atlantic and/or the Pacific. Maybe we’ll change them both."
Trump had even gone as far as to try and change the name of the state of New Mexico to 'New America', but this was immediately dismissed by the state’s governor.
The president said on Truth Social at the time: "Many people suggested changing the name of New Mexico... to NEW AMERICA.
"So much more prestigious and beautiful for the people of that potentially incredible State. Wow, I Love It!!!"
While Trump is planning to leave a legacy after his presidency comes to an end, many people have pointed out a major flaw in the plan to name so many things after himself...
... namely that his successor will likely just change the names right back.
One person tweeted: "He does understand the next President will reverse ALL these renamings…"
Another added: "...on the newly renamed Planet Trump?", and: "He thinks he's actually changing it but the entire world still calls these places their original names, it literally only changes for Americans lol."
Others posted: "You can't rename a body of water not owned by one country and governed by International law! Trump is not above the law!"
