Man accused of killing his politician wife sent chilling message to his uncle after her horrifying death
A man accused of murdering his wife, a prominent local politician, allegedly sent a haunting confession message to his uncle after the horrific killing.
Stephen Bowen, 40, is accused of shooting Coral Springs Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen, 38, inside their home late Tuesday night (March 31).
Police say the incident is being investigated as domestic violence, with Bowen now facing charges of first-degree premeditated murder and felony evidence tampering.
Alleged Confession and Cover-Up
Per arrest documents, Bowen allegedly used a pillow case as a makeshift silencer as he fired three shotgun rounds at his wife inside their home.
He is then accused of wrapping her body in blankets and a garbage bag and leaving it in a second-floor bedroom while he slept downstairs.
The following morning, he went to his uncle’s home, where he allegedly admitted "he did something to (his wife)" and revealed "she was not alive," per the New York Post.
When pressed for details, he reportedly confessed to the shooting. "Stephen Bowen said that he 'couldn’t take it anymore,'" the report stated.
The shooter also allegedly tried to convince his uncle to hold onto a gun bag for several weeks. He warned that he would need gloves or a bag to handle it.
Pretending Everything Was Normal
In the hours after the horrific killing, Bowen reportedly acted as though nothing had happened.
He reportedly responded to messages from his wife’s worried colleagues when she failed to show up for a scheduled meeting.
"Hi Stephen! Luwam here. I’m trying to reach Nancy. Can you pls ask her to call me?", Coral Springs Commission Relationship Manager Luwam Ghermay wrote.
"Texted her," Bowen replied. "She is not picking up." He also said: "Where is she? Her car is not at home."
It remains unclear whether a text sent from Metayer Bowen’s phone earlier that morning regarding "Discussion Items" had been scheduled in advance or sent by Bowen.
Police initially arrived at the home around 10:20AM, but later uncovered the alleged crime after speaking with Bowen’s uncle at around 2PM, who revealed what had happened.
Arrest and Final Moments
Law enforcement tracked the husband to an apartment complex in Plantation, where he was found handing off the gun bag and ammunition to a fellow Freemason who was unaware of the situation.
As police moved in, Bowen reportedly shouted: "Oh s***, they’re here for me."
He was taken into custody and is now being held in Broward County Jail without bond. Authorities confirmed there are no additional suspects.
Metayer Bowen was a respected figure in Coral Springs. She served as vice mayor and as vice chair of the Florida Democratic Party.
She was the city’s first Black and Haitian American female commissioner, elected in 2020 and reelected in 2024, and had recently been appointed to a second term as vice mayor.
Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried paid tribute, saying: "She loved her community deeply and believed, with every fiber of her being, that a better and more equitable future was possible for all of us.
"Above all, Nancy was my friend and a friend to everyone who has ever believed that democracy was worth fighting for. The world is less bright without her in it," she said.
City Manager Catherine Givens said Metayer Bowen had given much of herself to the Coral Springs community, located about 20 miles northwest of Fort Lauderdale.
The tragedy comes as Metayer Bowen was reportedly just weeks away from announcing a run for Congress.
