A man who shares a name with the disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein has revealed why he's chosen not to change it, despite the negative associations to it.
Sharing a name with a famous person can be fun as long as they are celebrated for the right reasons.
It's less enjoyable when you happen to share a name with a criminal, however, as this man found out.
If there's one person it's unfortunate to share a name with right now, it's Jeffrey Epstein, particularly with the renewed focus on the release of the Epstein files.
Now, you might assume you'd want to change your name from one you share with a convicted sex offender and human trafficker, but the other Jeffrey Epstein has revealed why he decided to stick it out with his birth name.
Taking to Instagram, he revealed: "My name is Jeffrey Epstein. Really. That is my birth name and obviously it's been quite an unfortunate name to have these last 10 years.
"And yes, I know I could have changed my name, but I didn't. I decided to stick it out and become a stand-up comedian instead, making fun of my reality of sharing a birth name with a notorious criminal who just can't stay out of the news."
Well, if you're going to keep a name like that, you might as well put it to good use.
He explained: "I've kept it on the down-low, haven't posted any of the material on social media, kinda saved it for live, in-person shows these last few years.
"But the people and Congress have spoken and they're demanding the release of the Epstein Comedy Files, so stay tuned."
He has since been sharing hilarious clips of how his name has landed him in some awkward situations through no fault of his own, including being called over the tannoy at the airport and being allocated a seat in the exit row of the plane where "kids are not allowed to sit".
He revealed that he'd also done some research and found that there are 106 other people with the name Jeffrey Epstein around the world, but joked that they are "not making any more of us" with parents with the surname Epstein choosing a different name for their sons born after around 2015, when the allegations first surfaced against the financier.
He joked: "We are now a closed membership society."
At one stand-up show, he told the crowd: "I did have to change my name on Instagram. I was getting a lot of hate.
"As if I'm him. As if I didn't kill myself in that jail cell in New York, but rather shrunk myself six inches, dyed my hair brown, and relocated to downtown Portland where criminal behavior is not punished. Plausible, yes."
