Tragic story of 18-year-old man who went missing before being discovered upside down in a cabin chimney seven years later

The tragic story of Joshua Maddux, an 18-year-old who went missing and was later found upside down in a cabin chimney seven years later, captivated the public due to the eerie circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

Maddux grew up with his family in Woodland Park, Colorado, and was described as an adventurous and creative young man who loved the outdoors and excelled in music, writing, and art.

According to Unresolved, his sister Ruth remembered him fondly, saying, “He loved animals and the outdoors: hiking, fishing, and camping with his friends." She also shared that he had an “off-the-charts IQ” and a unique sense of style that made him stand out.

However, the teen's life was also marked by a family tragedy as his older brother, Zachary, tragically committed suicide shortly before his graduation, which deeply affected him.

Ruth recalled how the loss of Zachary pushed Joshua into mourning, and his father, Mike, acknowledged that it was hard to help him through that grief.

The Disappearance of Joshua

On May 8, 2008, Joshua went for a walk in the morning and never returned. His family thought he might be starting a new adventure, as he had hinted at before.

However, when he didn’t come back after a few days, his father became concerned and reported him missing.

Despite their worries, authorities suggested that the 18-year-old might have simply run away, as he was an adult and there were no immediate signs of foul play.

Weeks turned into months, and the distraught family’s hope began to fade. They would periodically hear of bodies found in the area, but none were Joshua’s. His family, especially his father, continued to search for him, hoping for a miracle.

The Gruesome Discovery

In August 2015, seven years after Joshua vanished, a construction crew demolishing an old cabin near the Maddux family home made a haunting discovery.

A body was found lodged upside down in the cabin’s chimney. The remains were badly decomposed, but through dental records, it was confirmed to be Joshua.

The body was found in an unusual position, with the knees above the head, partially mummified, and wearing only a thermal shirt.

Questions immediately arose about how Joshua ended up in the chimney, especially given the challenging conditions of the structure.

The coroner, Al Born, ruled the teen's death an accident, suggesting that he had climbed down the chimney and became trapped. However, Born could not conclusively determine the cause of death, speculating that hypothermia, dehydration, or starvation could have played a role.

Theories and Unanswered Questions

While the coroner’s office closed the case, many found the explanation unsatisfactory.

Chuck Murphy, the cabin’s owner, questioned the official ruling and noted that the chimney had a metal grate near the top, which would have made it nearly impossible for Joshua to enter.

Murphy also pointed out that Joshua’s clothes were found outside the fireplace, further complicating the theory that he climbed in voluntarily.

Rumors began circulating in the town, with some suggesting foul play, and others claiming that Joshua had been last seen with a man named Andrew Newman, who had a violent history.

A Family Left Searching for Answers

Despite the official ruling, Joshua’s family remains uncertain about what truly happened.

Mike expressed his pain in an interview, saying, “I pray for him every single day. If he's in heaven, I pray he's at peace. If he's here on Earth somewhere, I pray he's OK. The pain is so great. I just have to accept it, grieve, and move on. But I want people to remember Josh."

Kate, his sister, shared with the Huffington Post that “We had hope of him being alive, and I feel like in a sense he continued to live on with us, because we had so many dreams of what he could possibly be doing.”
