The dramatic incident unfolded at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania, where authorities apprehended Luigi Mangione, the man accused of being the notorious "New York shooter." Mangione is charged with second-degree murder in the death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, who was fatally shot last week in New York City.
The high-profile crime sparked a nationwide manhunt, with Mangione’s face plastered across news outlets and social media platforms. His capture marked the end of an intense search—but not before an eerie twist at the McDonald's.
"We Thought It Was a Joke"
Larry, a witness at the restaurant, recalled the bizarre encounter that left him and his friends in disbelief. Speaking to reporters, Larry said he and his group were chatting casually when Mangione entered the restaurant.

"One of my friends, and I thought he was kidding when the shooter - who they made the arrest on - came in, he made a comment: 'Well, that looks like the shooter from New York,'" Larry explained. "But the group of us thought it was more of a joke, and we were kidding about it. But then, as it turned out, it was him."
The group brushed off the comment as a tasteless joke, never imagining they were in the presence of a wanted man.
Larry admitted he didn’t think much of it at the time and left shortly after to attend church. It wasn’t until later, when news of the arrest broke, that the surreal reality of the situation sank in.
"It was like she got in her mind: 'Oh, my God, it's a guy from New York'," Larry said, recounting a conversation with a McDonald’s employee who had recognized Mangione. She noted his distinctive "eyes and his eyebrows" while taking his order.
Arrested Without Incident
Mangione was arrested at 09:58AM local time after being recognized by a customer who flagged their concerns to an employee. Local police were alerted, and officers found Mangione sitting inside the restaurant wearing a blue mask and looking at a laptop.
Authorities said they confirmed his identity after he removed the mask. When questioned about his recent whereabouts, Mangione reportedly "became quiet and started to shake," according to an affidavit.
Arresting officer Tyler Frye later shared his thoughts on the moment, saying: “We didn’t even think twice about it; we knew that was our guy.” Reflecting on the significance of the case, he added: “It feels good to get a guy like that off the street, especially starting my career this way - it feels great.”
Police said they found a firearm, a false ID, and a handwritten document expressing "ill will" toward corporate America in his possession.
A Sobering Reminder
Larry reflected on the encounter as a moment that blurred the line between the absurd and the real.
"It’s crazy to think that someone you joke about like that could actually be who you’re talking about," he said. "It’s a moment I’ll never forget."

The McDonald’s location has since resumed normal operations, but the incident has left an indelible mark on those present.
Legal Fallout
Mangione is facing a range of charges in both New York and Pennsylvania, according to court documents.
In New York, he has been charged with murder, two counts of criminal possession of a loaded firearm, one count of criminal possession of a forged instrument, and one count of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
