Michelle Obama has opened up about her anxieties around the racism her daughters may face in the future.

In a new interview with CBS News presenter Gayle King, the 57-year-old former First Lady of the United States spoke about her own fears about the prejudice her children may experience when discussing the trial of ex-cop Derek Chauvin.

Chauvin was recently convicted in court for the murder of George Floyd in 2020, but Obama insisted that there was much work to be done in solving issues of police brutality and racial profiling in the USA.

Take a look at the interview in question in the video below:

In an interview due to air on Monday, May 10, Obama stated that her two daughters, 19-year-old Sasha and 22-year-old Malia, are now both old enough to drive.

But as they are both African-American, their mother claims that she worries for their safety whenever they leave the house unattended.

The former FLOTUS stated:

"They're driving, but every time they get in a car by themselves, I worry about what assumption is being made by somebody who doesn't know everything about them.

"The fact that they are good students and polite girls, but maybe they're playing their music a little loud. Maybe somebody sees the back of their head and makes an assumption."

She then added that it was important for modern Americans to have frank discussions on race, stating:

"We have to talk about it more and we have to ask our fellow citizens to listen a bit more, and to believe us and to know that we don't want to be out there marching."

These opinions appear to echo comments made by Obama's spouse, former POTUS Barack Obama, who took to his official Twitter account in the aftermath of Chauvin's conviction to share his thoughts.

In a statement made to his 131 million followers on Twitter, the ex-Democrat leader wrote: Today, a jury did the right thing. But true justice requires much more.

"Michelle and I send our prayers to the Floyd family, and we stand with all those who are committed to guaranteeing every American the full measure of justice that George and so many others have been denied."
