The eighth-grade student, who attended Handy Middle School in Bay City, was discovered unresponsive by a neighbor on Tuesday (April 15), shortly after being dropped off at his regular bus stop, according to CBS affiliate WNEM.

Emergency responders were called to the scene and attempted life-saving measures, but the teen was pronounced dead where he was found.

The Bay City Department of Public Safety and the Bay County Medical Examiner’s Office are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the sudden death.

Authorities have not publicly identified the student.

Sgt. Ben Krzyminski of the Department of Public Safety disclosed that there were no signs of foul play, PEOPLE reported.

“There were no signs of drugs or any injuries,” Krzyminski said, but added that “it is still unclear if the student showed any signs of distress.”

An autopsy will be conducted, though results are not expected for several months. Investigators may have a better idea of the cause of death within a week, WNEM reported.

Ben Tierney, director of communications and family engagement for Bay City Public Schools, expressed sorrow over the tragedy.

“This is a horrible tragedy for the family, and our entire school community is heartbroken for them,” he said. He added that the school district is “providing additional counseling support for staff and students who were impacted.”

“After reviewing bus video footage, we can verify that the student entered and exited the bus without issue,” he continued. “He was last seen by the driver walking home on a sidewalk, and was later found unresponsive by a local resident who called emergency services. Our local public safety department is still investigating. We have no additional details at this time.”

Bay City Public Schools Superintendent Rick Seebeck also released a statement through WEYI-TV, describing the incident as devastating.

He confirmed the student was found near MacGregor Elementary School and noted that students there were kept inside and released from a different location to avoid the scene while emergency personnel responded.

“District administrators met this evening to overview our crisis plan and ensure we reach out to all those impacted by this loss and support however possible,” Seebeck stated. “In the days and weeks ahead, as we learn more and grieve together, please know that help is available and we care deeply about each family we serve.”
