The tragic shooting at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan, on Sunday, left four people dead - and now one of the victims' last words have been revealed.

Among the victims was John Bond, a 77-year-old Navy veteran, who was one of two people allegedly shot and killed by Thomas Sanford, a former U.S. Marine.

Bond’s final moments with his wife, Joanne, were both emotional and poignant. Before his life was taken, he told her, “I love you,” and mentioned that he needed his shoes to be shined, Fox2Detroit reports.

A deadly rampage at a place of worship

The tragedy began when Sanford allegedly rammed his Chevy Silverado truck into the church, followed by a brutal attack on worshippers.

John Bond, described by his family as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, was fatally shot during the chaos. His loved ones recall him as someone who cherished family gatherings, golf, and trains.

A GoFundMe page set up in his honor highlighted his role as a loving patriarch, a Navy veteran who had been dedicated to his family and community.

Gunman’s background and motives

Sanford, who was also a military veteran, had served in Iraq from 2004 to 2008. His alleged actions appeared to be fueled by resentment, particularly against the Mormon faith.

In the days leading up to the attack, Sanford expressed his strong opposition to the religion, even calling it “the antichrist” during a conversation with a local political candidate.

Authorities are still investigating the full motive, though it seems to be linked to personal issues with the church.

The alleged gunman’s rampage ended in a confrontation with police, where Sanford was killed after a shootout with officers. Despite the tragedy, law enforcement’s swift response likely saved many lives, as they arrived on the scene in less than a minute after the first 911 call.

The fatal incident left the community shaken and is still being processed by those who knew the victims. As investigators continue to search for answers, the memory of John Bond, a man known for his warmth and love for his family, will remain a powerful reminder of the lives impacted by such horrific events.
