A Michigan man whose body was discovered on a private beach has a winning lottery ticket in his possession.
Gregory Jarvis from Caseville was found dead along the Saginaw Bay on the morning of October 1, ABC12 reports.
The outlet reports that the 57-year-old had died as a result of drowning, but now police have revealed that they discovered a winning lottery ticket in his wallet. Prior to his death, Jarvis has won the $45,000 jackpot playing Club Keno.
ABC12 reports how Jarvis has attempted to cash in the ticket, but was unable to claim the prize due to the condition of his social security card. Indy100 reports that the Michigan Lottery Commission requires winners claiming a prize over $600 to submit a photo ID and Social Security card.
Jarvis had reportedly applied for another card, but was found dead before it had arrived in the mail.
More on this story in the video below:Jarvis had won the prize on September 13. A regular at the Blue Water Inn, Jarvis reportedly told owner Dawn Talaski that he was "super excited" over the win.
The Inn owner says Jarvis was a "very nice guy", and added that he was buying rounds of drinks on September 19. After leaving the Blue Water Inn that evening, that was the last time anybody is believed to have seen Jarvis alive.
When he failed to show at the Inn the following day, that's when Talaski felt that "something was wrong".
The following Wednesday, Jarvis' boss came into the Inn after Gregory had failed to turn up to work. His body was found washed ashore near his boat on Friday.
Caseville Police Chief Kyle Romzek told WDIV that Jarvis is believed to have sustained a head injury while tying up his boat and that no foul play has been indicated in his death.
After learning about the winning ticket, Romzek says that the department conducted further investigations, however, the autopsy report subsequently supported the belief that Jarvis had fallen and sustained a head injury prior to drowning.
Speaking of Jarvis' plans with the money, Talaski told ABC12: "He was planning to take that money and go see his sister and his dad in North Carolina."
The winning ticket is now in the possession of Greg Jarvis' family.
