Mike Pence has labeled systematic racism in the US as a "left-wing myth".

The former vice president, 61, made the claim at a New Hampshire Republican event on Thursday, June 3, as he said: "America is not a racist country" to "raucous applause," The New York Times reported.

He went on to slam the teaching of "critical race theory" to American children, which argues that race is a social construct created to oppress people of color.

He went on: "Instead of teaching all of our children, regardless of race or creed or color, to be proud of their Country, Critical Race Theory teaches children as young as kindergarten to be ashamed of their skin color.

"It is past time for America to discard the left-wing myth of systemic racism."

Listen to Pence make his comments below:

Per HuffPost, Pence made his comments about America not being a racist country two days after POTUS Joe Biden made history by becoming the first-ever president to commemorate the 1921 Tulsa race massacre.

Biden said on Tuesday, June 2: "The events we speak of today took place 100 years ago. And yet I'm the first president in 100 years ever to come to Tulsa. We do ourselves no favors by pretending none of this ever happened or it doesn't impact us today, because it does still impact us today."

Pence went onto praise Donald Trump for the achievements he believes the pair had made during their four years in office, with HuffPost describing him as a potential candidate in the 2024 presidential election.

In his speech, Pence also opened up about the Capitol riot, explaining that he and Trump do not see eye-to-eye about the events that unfolded on January 6.

However, he made a point of not blaming Trump for what took place.

He said: "Jan. 6 was a dark day in the history of the United States Capitol.

"You know, President Trump and I have spoken many times since we left office, and I don't know if we’ll ever see eye to eye about that day. But I will always be proud of what we accomplished for the American people over the last four years."
