Mike Pence has said that he is "proud" that the Trump administration is the "first in decades" not to get the United States into a new war.

The 61-year-old outgoing US vice president made the comments following his visit to troops at New York state's Fort Drum - where he gave what he called his final speech at VP, North Country Public Radio reports.

Following his speech, Pence took to Twitter to share the following statement with his 6 million followers:

"I’m proud to report with just a few days left in our Administration, our Administration is the first in decades that did not get America into a new war. That’s Peace through Strength."

And while this is true, Pence's tweet was still met with backlash from many Twitter users, with many citing the Capitol riots of January 6.

One Twitter user replied: "Nah, your boss just instigated an insurrection that put you and your family at risk from being killed by a mob."

Another added: "you got America into the biggest war yet. we’re at war with our democracy, people, and government. you created the worst war possible [sic]."

A third person also cited the January 6 protests, writing: "Just a violent insurrection at home prompted by the leader of your administration- no biggie though."

One Twitter user replied: "Maybe not a foreign war. You just managed to start a civil war at home. DC looks very different today than four years ago."

Other people also referenced the current death toll as a result of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, which, per the John Hopkins University Resource Center, currently stands at 397,600.

"I’m here for the 400,000 Covid dead - they’d like me to tell you to shut up," one person replied.

Another person wrote: "400,000 dead. An attack on the Capitol, mobs hunting elected officials with nooses. Thanks for your observation, but you and Trump killed more of us than an enemy ever could."

Per Fox News, back in October, the White House released a statement titled "The Trump Doctrine: Terrorists Lose and Peace Wins", which touted the military's accomplishments under the Trump administration.

The statement proudly stated: "President Trump is the first American leader since Ronald Reagan not to start a war. Instead, he has rebuilt our military, restored American sovereignty, and renewed the 'peace through strength' foreign policy that helped the United States win the Cold War."

Additionally, the statement celebrated that the "ISIS caliphate is destroyed", and that the "terrorist leaders" Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and Qasem Soleimani are now dead under Trump's command.

Back in December, Forbes also ran an article that said no matter your feelings about Trump's presidency, he has done more "in four years to shift the vector of U.S. military preparations than most accomplish in eight."
