Morning show TV anchor stabs own mom to death on Halloween morning 'to save herself’

A former Missouri TV news anchor has been arrested after allegedly stabbing her 80-year-old mother to death inside their Wichita home.

Angelynn Mock, 47, who once worked as an anchor for Fox 2 News in St. Louis between 2011 and 2015, was taken into custody on Friday morning following what authorities are calling a brutal domestic homicide.

According to the Wichita Police Department, officers responded to a residence on East Crowley shortly before 8:00AM after receiving a distressing 911 call.

Inside, they discovered 80-year-old Anita Avers — Mock’s mother — unresponsive in her bed with multiple stab wounds. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead roughly half an hour later.

Mock, who had cuts on her hands, was found outside the home when police arrived. She was treated at a local hospital before being booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on a charge of first-degree murder.

“I stabbed my mother to save myself,” caller told dispatch

Sedgwick County dispatch recordings, obtained by local station KAKE, reveal that a woman phoned 911 and claimed she had “stabbed her mother to save herself.”

Authorities have not confirmed who made the call, but neighbors say they witnessed Mock emerge from the home covered in blood just moments before officers arrived.

“There was a woman who approached our vehicle with like blood, like her hands were filled, her body was filled with blood, asking to call 911,” said neighbor Alyssa Castro, who lives nearby.

She told KAKE that Mock took her boyfriend’s phone, ran back into the house, and called for help.

“I asked her if she was okay, and she was pretty shooken up and she seemed scared, and she just ran off,” Castro recalled.

Neighbors shaken by the morning horror

Castro described the shocking moment as something she and her boyfriend will never forget. Police later returned their phone after securing the scene, and Castro said she was simply grateful they “were able to help.”

“Like, we never know what anyone is going through. This happened randomly, but as long as we were able to get 911 and see what we can do, that’s all I really care about,” she told KAKE.

Mock was later transferred from the hospital to the Sedgwick County Jail, where she remains held on a $1 million bond, according to the county sheriff’s office.

Victim was a respected therapist

Family members confirmed to KAKE that the victim, Anita Avers, was a marriage and family therapist at Wichita Counseling Professionals, where she was known for her compassion and decades-long career in mental health.

Avers’ husband also confirmed her identity to reporters, describing the loss as devastating.

Before the shocking killing, Mock had been known in St. Louis media circles as a bright on-air personality.

During her years with Fox 2 News, she served as both a morning and evening fill-in anchor before leaving the station in 2015.

Her career later shifted away from broadcasting — with several sales positions in the St. Louis area until 2017 — before joining a Midwest-based data management company that operates offices across several states, including Wichita.

Wichita Police say the investigation remains active, and no motive has yet been confirmed. They have not released further details about what may have led to the deadly confrontation between Mock and her mother.
