Although we aren't even a year into Trump's second term, eyes have turned to the next election.

Trump is unable to run for a third term, as written in the Constitution - although there were rumors he would try.

Despite publicly stating he does not intend to seek a third term, Trump has continued to tease the idea, telling TIME Magazine: “I’d rather not discuss that now, but as you know, there are some loopholes that have been discussed that are well known.”

He added: “But I don't believe in loopholes. I don't believe in using loopholes.”

The remarks follow an NBC News interview where Trump hinted there were “methods” to bypass the Constitution’s two-term limit.

When pressed by TIME on methods discussed, Trump sidestepped, saying: “I don’t know anything about, what, look, all I can say is this, I am being inundated with requests.”

“I'm doing a good job,” Trump continued. “Great physical exam, and unlike every other president, I took the cognitive test and I aced it 100%, and I bet you guys couldn't get 100% on that exam.”

Trump also deflected when reminded of a previous quote: “I'm going to serve one term. I'm going to do a great job, and I'm going to leave.”

He replied: “Well, I’m serving two terms now.”

When TIME attempted to clarify, he said: “You mean one more,” and added: “I have more people begging me to run again, but I haven't looked at even the possibility. But the only thing that's changed is they think I'm doing a great job, and they like the way I'm running the country.”

So, who is in the running to take over?

According to a new Emerson College survey, Vice President J.D. Vance leads the 2028 GOP field with 46 percent support, far ahead of Marco Rubio’s 12 percent and Ron DeSantis' 9 percent.

Independent Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. garnered 5 percent support, while Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley each earned 2 percent.

The poll, which surveyed 1,000 registered voters, including 416 Republican primary voters between June 24 and 25 with a 4.8-point margin of error for GOP respondents, found that 17 percent were undecided, and six other candidates polled at 1 percent or less.

Vance’s support has grown significantly since Emerson’s November poll, rising from 30 percent to 46 percent, while DeSantis and other contenders saw little change. In November, half of the respondents were undecided.

President Trump has praised both Vance and Rubio but has stopped short of officially designating either as his successor. “

You look at Marco, you look at JD Vance, who’s fantastic,” Trump told NBC News in a May interview on Meet the Press. “You look at - I could name 10, 15, 20 people right now just sitting here. No, I think we have a tremendous party.”

But 2028 is a while away yet, so things could change!
