People are pointing out 'major sign' apparent attempted Trump shooting was 'staged' after Karoline Leavitt made 'slip up' in interview
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has sparked a wave of online speculation after a joke she made before the White House Correspondents’ Dinner took on a chilling new meaning following a real shooting at the event.
Speaking with Fox News ahead of Saturday’s dinner on April 25, Leavitt teased what people could expect from Donald Trump’s appearance, saying he was “ready to rumble” and promising “classic Donald J. Trump” in his address. She also said: “It’ll be funny. It’ll be entertaining.”
Then came the line that sent social media into overdrive after the night took a shocking turn. Referring to Trump’s speech and the expected political roasting, Leavitt joked: “There will be some shots fired tonight in the room,” a comment many online initially misread before the full context became clear.
Leavitt’s joke was about roasts, not violence
Leavitt’s remark was made in reference to verbal jabs expected during the annual dinner, not anything sinister. She also made clear Trump had largely written his own speech, saying: “I can't take credit. In true Donald Trump fashion, the man puts his pen to the paper himself. So it's a lot of his own work.”
But later in the evening, the phrase took on a very different tone when Secret Service agents rushed President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump out of the event after a man opened fire near the main magnetometer screening area.
One officer was shot but protected by a bulletproof vest and taken to hospital.
Authorities identified the suspect as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen from Torrance, California. He was reportedly staying as a guest at the Washington Hilton, where the dinner was taking place, and faces charges including assaulting an officer with a dangerous weapon. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said more charges are expected.
Chaos erupts as Trump is evacuated
Trump later shared images on Truth Social showing the suspect handcuffed on the ground after being detained.
In a statement, Secret Service chief of communications Antony Guglielmi said per ABC7 San Francisco: “The U.S. Secret Service, in coordination with the Metropolitan Police Department, is investigating a shooting incident near the main magnetometer screening area at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner,
“The president and the first lady are safe along with all protectees. One individual is in custody. The condition of those involved is not yet known, and law enforcement is actively assessing the situation.”
The dramatic interruption stunned attendees at what had been billed as Trump’s first time attending the annual dinner as president.
Speaking at a late-night press conference after the incident, Trump said the disrupted event would be rescheduled and suggested the shooting had “unified” political opponents and members of the media.
Social media runs with conspiracy theories
Leavitt’s earlier “shots fired” line quickly spread online, with some users trying to tie the comment to conspiracy theories before others pointed back to the original interview and its obvious comedic context.
One person claimed on X: "It was a planned fake assassination attempt directed by Trump, Karoline was literally saying out loud watch we need you to this so Trump polling goes back up sick monsters."
Another added: "Tell us more, karoline. how did you pick the guy? from central casting?"
A third wrote: "What an odd choice of words. Trump, so thin-skinned, he used another assassination attempt to keep from being roasted. He’s cried “wolf” once too often!"
What began as a joke about political barbs suddenly became part of a far bigger story, but the context, as many pointed out, was there from the start.
Leavitt had been talking about roast-style attacks from the podium. Hours later, a real security emergency transformed an offhand quip into one of the night’s most talked-about moments.
