FBI agents have executed a search warrant at the Florida home of Brian Laundrie's family, a day after human remains matching the description of his missing girlfriend, Gabby Petito, were found.
On Monday, September 20, at around 9:45AM local time, the authorities removed Laundrie's parents from their home, and, as reported by the Independent, referred to the North Port property as a "crime scene."
The surrounding area was cordoned off before the FBI swarmed the house in order to execute their search. Officials were reportedly heard saying "search warrant" and "you’re in a crime scene".
Laundrie's father, Christopher, was also seen being led away from his home by the authorities and he and his wife Roberta remained in a parked police van in their driveway while the search was underway.
The FBI tweeted that it was "executing a court-authorized search warrant today at the Laundrie residence in North Port, FL relevant to the Gabrielle 'Gabby' Petito investigation."
The FBI added: "No further details can be provided since this is an active and ongoing investigation."
On September 15, 23-year-old Laundrie was named a person of interest, four days after 22-year-old Gabby Petito was reported missing by her parents, who live in New York.
Laundrie and Petito were traveling across the country in her converted white van and had been visiting state national parks in the West Coast before she suddenly disappeared.
Petito's parents last spoke to their daughter on FaceTime around August 24 and on August 30, her mother received a final text message from her daughter's phone, which read: "No service in Yosemite" - a message she does not believe Gabby sent.
Just two days after, on September 1, Laundrie returned to the North Port home that he shared with both Petito and his parents - without his girlfriend.
From the outset, Laundrie failed to cooperate with police, who said that he had neither "made himself available to be interviewed by investigators," nor "provided any helpful details."
On September 17, Laundrie's mother and father told the authorities that they had not seen their son since September 14.
Yesterday (September 19), human remains were found in Teton County, Wyoming, which the FBI stated were "consistent with the description" of Petito.
"Full forensic identification has not been completed to confirm 100% that we found Gabby, but her family has been notified of this discovery," Charles Jones, FBI Denver's supervisory senior resident agent in Wyoming, said.
