Two people remain in life-threatening condition after a stabbing attack on board a London-bound train on Saturday evening. The incident occurred on a service traveling from Doncaster to London King’s Cross, forcing an emergency stop at Huntingdon Station in Cambridgeshire.
Armed officers boarded the train minutes after receiving emergency calls and arrested two men. Authorities have confirmed that both suspects are British nationals, aged 32 and 35. They were taken into custody on suspicion of attempted murder.
Police say there is currently no evidence suggesting the attack was terrorism-related, The Guardian reports.
Victims still in critical condition as investigation continues
The British Transport Police (BTP) confirmed that ten people were taken to hospital following the attack, with one more presenting later on Saturday evening. Four have since been discharged, while two remain in a life-threatening condition. The others are still being treated for serious injuries.
Emergency services, including police, ambulance, and fire crews, responded rapidly. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood praised their efforts, stating, “My deepest thanks go to the British Transport Police, Cambridgeshire Police, Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service and the East of England Ambulance Service. They responded rapidly, with the utmost professionalism and saved lives.”
She also commended the "exceptional bravery of staff and passengers on the train."
Community leaders and officials react
The King and Queen issued a rare statement expressing their shock. “My wife and I were truly appalled and shocked to hear of the dreadful knife attack that took place on board a train in Cambridgeshire last night. Our deepest sympathy and thoughts are with all those affected, and their loved ones. We are particularly grateful to the emergency services for their response to this awful incident.”
Huntingdon’s mayor, Audrey McAdam, also shared her emotional reaction in an interview. “I'm still in shock... To live in that moment... It's a horror film, complete horror... I cannot imagine what the people must have been feeling.”
Prime Minister Keir Starmer is receiving regular updates, and Defence Secretary John Healey stated that the UK's terror threat level remains "substantial," meaning an attack is considered likely. He urged people not to speculate and praised the resilience of the British public.
Police have urged anyone with information to contact the British Transport Police as their investigation continues.
