Donald Trump has become the first president in US history to be impeached twice.

As per ABC News, the vote was passed today by the House of Representatives with the count currently standing at 225-194.

The president has been charged with one article of impeachment for "incitement of insurrection" for his role in the Capitol riots last week.

The news outlet added that at least ten Republicans sided with the Democrats to remove the outgoing president just a week before his term is due to end.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced Trump's second impeachment, saying: "The resolution is adopted without objection."

Donald Trump will now face a trial in the Senate where, if convicted, he will be prevented from ever running for president again, the BBC reports.

However, it is unlikely that Trump will leave office before his term ends as the Senate is not expected to convene in time.

CNN reports that the ten Republicans who voted in favor of the impeachment resolution are as follows:

  1. Rep. Dan Newhouse of Washington
  2. Rep. John Katko of New York
  3. Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler of Washington
  4. Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois
  5. Rep. Fred Upton of Michigan
  6. Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming
  7. Rep. Peter Meijer of Michigan
  8. Rep. Anthony Gonzalez of Ohio
  9. Rep. Tom Rice of South Carolina
  10. Rep. David Valadao of California

Representative Jim Jordan said that while he was not surprised by the number of Republicans who voted to impeach Trump, he had hoped that it would be less.

"It's about where I thought it might be," Jordan said walking off the floor. "I was hoping it would be less."

When asked if he still regarded if he views Trump as the leader of the Republican party, Jordan said: "Of course."

"His support is strong because the American people appreciate that over the last four years he did more of what he said he would do than any President in my life," Jordan said.

Per Reuters, prior to Trump's second impeachment, Pelosi said on the House floor: "The president of the United States incited this insurrection, this armed rebellion against our common country.

"He must go. He is a clear and present danger to the nation that we all love."

Per ABC News, yesterday (January 12), when speaking to reporters outside the White House before heading to the US-Mexico border in Texas, the outgoing president dismissed plans of his impeachment by House Democrats as "ridiculous".

"As far as this is concerned, we want no violence. Never violence," Trump said. "On the impeachment, it's really a continuation of the greatest witch hunt in the history of politics. It's ridiculous. It's absolutely ridiculous.

"This impeachment is causing tremendous anger, and you're doing it, and it’s really a terrible thing that they’re doing," he added.

That being said, CNN has reported that "Trump has nothing on his schedule and lacks a comprehensive legal strategy" in response to today's proceedings.

CNN's Kaitlan Collins and Kevin Liptak write: "Aides expect Trump to mostly watch the proceedings on television throughout the day. But without Twitter, a campaign rally, a team of lawyers or Republicans willing to defend his actions, Trump is set to weather the historic shaming in subdued fashion."
