Rob Reiner gave heartbreaking six-word update on son Nick in interview this year and said he was 'never, ever too busy' for him

Just months before his death, Rob Reiner spoke candidly and lovingly about his relationship with his son Nick Reiner – offering an update that now carries heartbreaking weight in light of recent events.

The legendary filmmaker opened up during a September appearance on Fresh Air while promoting Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, reflecting on family, fatherhood, and a film he co-created with Nick that was deeply personal to them both.

During the interview, host Terry Gross asked Reiner about Being Charlie, the 2015 film he directed and Nick co-wrote. The movie drew heavily from Nick’s own experiences with addiction and homelessness, telling the story of a young man battling substance abuse while navigating a complicated relationship with his father.

While the fictional father in the film struggles to balance career ambitions with his son’s needs, Reiner made it clear that this dynamic did not reflect his own parenting.

‘I Was Never, Ever Too Busy’

“I was never, ever too busy,” he said during the interview, via NPR. “If anything, I was the other way. I was more hands-on and trying to do whatever I thought I could do to help.”

He acknowledged that, like any parent navigating a child’s addiction, he made mistakes along the way – but said those moments were later discussed openly between them.

“I’m sure I made mistakes,” Reiner admitted. “And I’ve talked about that with him since.”

The Six-Word Update That Now Feels Devastating

At the time of the interview, Reiner believed his son was doing well and spoke with optimism about Nick’s recovery journey. He shared that Nick had been sober for several years and appeared to be in a healthier place.

“He’s in a really good place.”

The six-word update, offered with pride and relief, has since taken on tragic significance following the deaths of Rob and his wife, Michele Reiner, and Nick’s subsequent arrest.

A Creative Bond That Never Disappeared

Reiner also spoke warmly about reconnecting creatively with his son after years apart. He likened their reunion on Spinal Tap II to musicians effortlessly finding their rhythm again.

“After 15 years of not working together, we came back and started looking at this,” he said. “It was like falling right back in with friends you hadn’t talked to in a long time.”

For Reiner, the collaboration wasn’t just about filmmaking – it was about connection.

A Legacy Beyond the Screen

Rob Reiner, who rose to fame on All in the Family before directing classics like Stand By Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, and A Few Good Men, was widely admired for both his creative legacy and his devotion to family.

In hindsight, his words from that September interview stand as a poignant reminder of a father who never stopped trying, never stopped showing up, and never believed he was too busy to fight for his child.
