President Donald Trump has revealed plans for a new nationwide athletic competition called the “Patriot Games”, set to take place as part of the United States’ 250th anniversary celebrations in 2026.
The announcement was made in a video shared by Freedom 250, a national organization coordinating events tied to the historic milestone. Trump described the upcoming celebrations as “the most spectacular birthday party the world has ever seen”, promising large-scale events and patriotic fanfare throughout the year.
What Are the Patriot Games?
According to Trump, the Patriot Games will be a four-day athletic competition featuring young athletes from across the country.
Each state and US territory will be represented by two competitors (one male and one female) selected from the top high school athletes in their region, according to The Independent.

While the exact format and events have not yet been revealed, Trump framed the Games as a showcase of American strength, youth, and athletic excellence. The competition is expected to take place in the fall of 2026, though host locations and scheduling details remain unannounced.
During the announcement, Trump addressed the issue of gender participation, stating that the event would not allow transgender athletes to compete in women’s sports.
“But I promise there will be no men playing in women’s sports,” Trump said. “You’re not going to see that.”
The remark drew immediate attention online, with supporters praising the stance and critics questioning the tone of the event overall.
Few Details Released So Far
At present, it remains unclear what prizes or rewards the winners of the Patriot Games will receive beyond national recognition. Trump did not specify whether scholarships, financial awards, or ceremonial honors would be part of the competition.
The Freedom 250 website offered only a brief preview, describing the event as beginning with opening heats and culminating in a live final day before a national audience. Organizers said the competitors would “light the torch for a new generation of Americans”.
Comparisons to The Hunger Games
Almost immediately, critics began drawing comparisons between the Patriot Games and the Hunger Games franchise, a dystopian series of books and movies in which children are selected from districts to compete in a deadly televised contest.
While the fictional comparison is exaggerated, the similarities in structure (young competitors chosen from each region) prompted unease among some commentators online.
The Democratic Party amplified those concerns by sharing a clip from the first Hunger Games film, featuring the fictional authoritarian leader explaining the concept of the games as a patriotic spectacle.
Political Reaction and Ongoing Debate
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker also joined the discussion, reposting an image from the film that shows the villainous leader raising a champagne glass, suggesting discomfort with the framing of the real-world event.
As planning for America’s 250th anniversary continues, the Patriot Games are likely to remain a flashpoint for debate, with supporters seeing them as a celebration of unity, and critics questioning both the symbolism and messaging behind the competition.
For now, the event remains largely undefined – but firmly in the national spotlight.
