Comedian Seth Meyers has called for incumbent President Donald Trump to be "removed from office" and "prosecuted" in the aftermath of the Capitol riots.

Per Mashable, in a live monologue delivered on his eponymous talk show, Meyers had stern words for the Republican leader and his supporters, who stormed the Capitol building and interrupted Congress - an incident which led to the death of four people and several injuries.

Addressing the audience directly, Meyers stated:

"I think it's important, as the first draft of history is being written, and as we're all processing what we witnessed today, to be as plain-spoken and clear-eyed as possible.

"What we saw today was a violent insurgency, an attempt to overthrow the legitimately elected government of the United States.

"And it was incited, directed, and encouraged by the President, Donald Trump, and more than a few members of the Republican Party and right-wing media."

Take a look at Meyers' report on the incident in the video below:

Meyers then proceeded to lambast Trump directly, stating:

"As for Trump, the only way... our democracy will survive this harrowing moment, is if he is immediately removed from office by either the cabinet or the Congress, and prosecuted."

"Anything less is tacit permission to continue to use his office and his influence after he leaves office, to foment sedition and dismantle democracy."

Trump has continually rejected the legitimacy of President-Elect Joe Biden's victory in the 2020 US elections, and made a number of baseless accusations of voter fraud on the part of the Democrat Party, alleging that Republican votes in several states were either lost, unaccounted for, or intentionally destroyed.

However, the incumbent President has now finally agreed to an "orderly transition" of power on January 20, despite his assertion that he disagrees with the outcome of the election itself.

Per CNN Trump claimed in an official statement:

"Even though I totally disagree with the outcome of the election, and the facts bear me out, nevertheless there will be an orderly transition on January 20th.

"I have always said we would continue our fight to ensure that only legal votes were counted. While this represents the end of the greatest first term in presidential history, it's only the beginning of our fight to Make America Great Again."

In a video statement made from the White House as the Capitol riots took place, Trump addressed the public in a video statement shared with his 88 million Twitter followers.

Per The New York Times, Trump told the protestors to "go home," and ended his diatribe with the words: "I love you." As a result, Facebook removed the video, and Trump has been temporarily blocked from Facebook and Twitter.
