Olympic star Sha’Carri Richardson was arrested and charged with fourth-degree domestic violence assault earlier this week, in a case that has since been cleared.
The alleged incident occurred on Sunday (July 27), shortly after the 25-year-old sprinter and her boyfriend, fellow track star Christian Coleman, had passed through TSA security at the Seattle–Tacoma International Airport.
According to a police report cited by The New York Times, an officer witnessed Richardson pushing Coleman, 29, multiple times before he stumbled into a nearby column.
USA Today reported that airport surveillance footage showed Coleman attempting to walk away as Richardson continued to bump into him. Authorities also alleged she threw a pair of headphones at him during the altercation.
A TSA supervisor initially alerted police to the disturbance.
Coleman ultimately “declined to be a victim” and chose not to press charges.
Richardson was taken into custody and booked at the South Correctional Entity in Des Moines, Washington, on July 27. She was released the following day, Monday, July 28, according to jail records obtained by PEOPLE.
In a statement, USA Track and Field (USATF) said, “USATF is aware of the reports. We do not have a comment on this matter.”
Richardson’s representatives and the Seattle Police Department have not responded to further requests for comment.
Despite the arrest, the couple both competed at the 2025 USATF Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, later that week.
On Thursday (July 31), Richardson ran an 11.07 in her heat of the women’s 100 meters, securing a place in Friday’s semifinal.
Smiling after the race, the athlete spoke positively about competing in Eugene and knowing her spot at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo is already secured.
“USA is one of the hardest teams to make, so it definitely is a kind of a release of pressure knowing I have a bye,” she said, per News.com.au. “It feels really good to not have that pressure and still be able to go to Tokyo.
“Right now I’m cruising under the radar, but when it’s time to hit – it’s gonna be a bang where y’all see my name," she added.
However, she later withdrew from the semifinal and announced she would not compete in the 200-meter race either.
The sprinter, who was famously barred from competing at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 after testing positive for marijuana use after her victory at the US trials, claimed a silver medal in the 100 meters and a gold in the 4×100-meter relay at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
She previously won gold in the 100 meters at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest.
