On day four of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic games, US gymnastics trailblazer Simone Biles has been forced out of the women's team gymnastics final.

The 24-year-old competed in Team USA's first rotation on vault on Tuesday, July 26 - completing a 1.5 twist on a 2.5-twisting Yurchenko, but suffered a stumble on the landing, NBC News reports. She also reportedly bailed on her planned Amanar maneuver.

The routine landed her a score of 13.766 - the lowest vault score of her Olympics career.

Team USA Gymnastics has since released a statement on its official Twitter account, reading:

"Simone Biles has withdrawn from the team final competition due to a medical issue. She will be assessed daily to determine medical clearance for future competitions."

No further information has been provided surrounding the "medical issue", but the live Olympics blog did mention that Biles had been seen with her foot "heavily strapped".

After pulling out of the uneven bars event, reserve Jordan Chiles was subbed in as Biles' replacement.

Chiles - along with Suni Lee and Grace McCallum - will continue on with the competition.

On Monday, Biles took to Instagram to comment on her team's rocky start in the preliminary competition.

Appearing to reference the stumble she made in the vault and floor events on Sunday, she wrote: "It wasn’t an easy day or my best but I got through it. I truly do feel like I have the weight of the world on my shoulders at times.

"I know I brush it off and make it seem like pressure doesn’t affect me but damn sometimes it’s hard hahaha! The olympics is no joke! BUT I’m happy my family was able to be with me virtually [...] they mean the world to me!"

Despite the huge blow for the women's team final, Biles - who is competing at her second Olympic Games - is still reportedly on track to compete for gold in the vault, floor, bars, and beam events, and will be looking to make history as the first woman to win back-to-back golds in the all-around.
