A US soldier has been charged with assault after he was filmed shoving and threatening a Black man.
ABC7 News reports that 42-year-old Army sergeant and drill instructor at Fort Jackson Jonathan Pentland has been charged with third-degree assault and battery.
The charges come after a video emerged on social media on Monday of Pentland seemingly threatening a young Black man at the Lakes at Barony Place; a gated community in Richland County located in the Summit neighborhood of South Carolina.
Take a look at the footage of the incident in the video below:According to police documents, Pentland is currently detained in the Richland County jail and has been issued a personal recognizance bond. If found guilty of the above charges, he faces 30 days in jail and a $500 fine.
The three-minute-long video, which was posted on social media by a woman named Shadae Mccallum, shows an irate Pentland angrily asking his victim (identified only as Deandre) what he was doing near his property.
When Deandre responded that he was only out for a walk, Pentland became more incensed; slapping Deandre's phone out of his hand and violently shoving him.
In the video, which you can view above, Pentland can be heard stating:
"You're in the wrong neighborhood motherf*****. Get out. I ain't playing with you.
"I'm about to show you what I can do. You either walk away or I'm going to carry your a** out of here."
The original tweet has since accrued over 1.3 million views on Twitter alone, as of this writing.
It eventually caught the attention of Fort Jackson Brigadier General Milford Beagle Jr, who took to Twitter to state: "Fort Jackson officials are aware of the video taken in the Summit and it has our full attention."
He added: "This type of behavior is not consistent with our Army Values and will not be condoned. We have begun our own investigation and are working with local authorities.
"Thank you to our community for bringing this to our attention and we will get to the bottom of this ASAP. [sic]"
Newsweek reports that in the wake of the video being uploaded to social media, Pentland and his family have been forced to move out of their home on Wednesday night after it was vandalized.
