The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) has confirmed that an off-duty deputy has been suspended without pay following a tense incident involving multiple teenagers in Hilton Head, South Carolina, on Sunday evening.
BCSO Launches Internal Affairs Investigation
In an official press release, BCSO stated that an Internal Affairs Investigation is underway to examine the deputy’s conduct. Additionally, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has been requested to conduct a separate review for any potential criminal violations.
“Deputies are held to a higher standard, as they must abide by all BCSO policies and procedures, both on and off duty,” the statement read, via News Nation. BCSO added that the investigation could take time due to the number of individuals needing interviews. The identity of the deputy will be released at a later date.
Incident Captured on Video Sparks Outrage
Video footage circulating online shows the deputy confronting a group of teens, with one youth shouting, “Call the police.” The deputy responds: “I am the police.”
The altercation escalated after the deputy seized a bag from one of the teenagers, per WRAL. One teen attempted to retrieve it and was grabbed by the deputy, while another stepped in and pushed him. At one point, the deputy drew his firearm and pointed it at the minors.
“Help! Help! Help! Mom! Mom!” one teen can be heard pleading as he obeyed the deputy’s orders to get on the ground.
Later footage, obtained by ABC7 Chicago, showed the aftermath from another individual’s point of view, depicting one teen restrained on the ground while bystanders tried to understand what had led to the confrontation.
Deputy Suspended, Firearm and Credentials Seized
BCSO confirmed that the deputy has been relieved of all Sheriff’s Office-issued weapons, badge, and credentials. Command staff responded to the scene following multiple reports of a disturbance.
Neighbors have reported that the deputy may have been intoxicated during the incident, though BCSO has not confirmed this. Officers on the scene reportedly declined to conduct a breathalyzer test.
Families of the teens involved have retained legal counsel and plan to press charges against the suspended deputy. Additional video footage showing the events leading up to the encounter is expected to be released, according to the families.
SLED Conducting Parallel Investigation
The 14th Judicial Circuit Solicitor, Isaac Stone, said SLED is reviewing the deputy’s actions, Yahoo News reports. Once their investigation is complete, the Regional Public Integrity Unit will determine whether criminal charges are warranted.
Police were on scene for several hours, from approximately 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., while neighbors and family members sought clarity on the unfolding situation.
