Officials have revealed that a Subway employee was fatally shot following an argument over too much mayonnaise.
As reported by ABC News, a customer at a Subway restaurant in Downtown Atlanta, Georgia, shot two employees after he became angry over how they had made his order.
Atlanta Police Deputy Chief Charles Hampton Jr. has confirmed that one of the employees - a 26-year-old woman - was killed as a result of the shooting, which occurred on Sunday, June 26.
The other employee, a 24-year-old woman, is currently in critical condition. Her five-year-old child was inside of the restaurant at the time of the shooting, per Hampton.
More on this story in the video below:Both employees had only worked in the Subway store for a matter of weeks. The employees have not yet been named by police.
One of the owners of the Subway, Willie Glenn, told ABC News, "A customer came in and he wasn't happy with the way his sandwich was made - there was too much mayonnaise on it."
Deputy Hampton confirmed that the customer became "upset" after determining that there was "something wrong with [his] sandwich", and "decided to take out his anger on two of the employees" in a "senseless act" of gun violence.
Glenn said that the incident has left him in shock and unable to comprehend why the customer didn't just ask either of the employees to "take some mayo off, or make another sandwich, or ask for a refund."
The chain owner added:
"I just never, ever, ever thought that any kind of situation would rise to that level. We've always been able to deescalate any situation. But this one just went from zero to 100 in a matter of seconds."
"Now we've got a young person who is probably going to spend the rest of his life in jail over a $7 sandwich and some mayonnaise," Glenn said.
The employer has praised both staff members, describing them as "excellent workers" that "got along great with everybody in the store."
Just model employees," Glenn said.
He is now considering closing the store for good, saying: "I can't put anybody else at risk like that in that neighborhood. It's not worth somebody's life."
Speaking to Fox 5 Atlanta, Glenn added: "Everybody wants to carry a gun. Everybody wants to scare somebody wit ha gun. It’s scary out here."
An unnamed 36-year-old male has been arrested.
Hampton said of the suspect: "Yes it's a sandwich, but more importantly, someone who failed to resolve a conflict, having a conversation to just re-order a sandwich, decided to take actions in his hands. And now we have families who are devastated."
Police are now investigating the incident and reviewing security footage.
