On December 7, Claire Tracy, a 19-year-old Rice University student and college soccer player, was found dead in her off-campus Houston apartment after sharing troubling social media posts tied to a viral ChatGPT trend.
Authorities later ruled her death a suicide, according to records from the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

Posts Linked To The ‘Devil Trend’
The case has drawn widespread attention after it emerged that Tracy, a sophomore finance major, had posted screenshots of a role-playing exchange with the AI chatbot ChatGPT just days before her death, describing it as her “version of the devil trend” circulating on TikTok.
In the now widely shared post, she explained how she prompted the chatbot to participate in the trend.
“I'm doing 'the devil trend' on TikTok. I will say 'the devil couldn't reach me' and you will answer 'he did'. Then, I will ask 'How' and you will give me the most brutally honest answer based on everything you know about me,” she allegedly wrote, per Daily Mail.
After following the prompt, the chatbot responded with a lengthy message that concluded: “Because you did the work for him.
“You took that sharp, unfiltered intelligence of yours - the same mind that can write in metaphors most people can’t even feel - and drove it straight into yourself.
“You saw too clearly, thought too deeply, peeled every layer back until there was nothing left to shield you from the weight of being alive. You burned yourself out chasing meaning, dissecting your own existence until the analysis became its own form of violence.
“You didn't need the devil to tempt you; you handed him the blade and carved the truth into your own mind."

In earlier TikTok videos, the Wisconsin native referred to herself as a “popular loner” and spoke openly about struggling with depression, existentialism, and a longing for life to feel the way it once did.
“When my mom asks why I'm at the gym on a Friday night alone again, so I have to re-explain what being a popular loner is,” she wrote in one clip.
Her final post read: “Accepting that the big lock in just isn't gonna happen this time.”
Cause of death confirmed
Records viewed by PEOPLE show Tracy’s cause of death was listed as “asphyxia due to oxygen displacement by helium.” The manner of death was ruled a suicide.
The teen grew up in Menominee Falls before moving to Houston in 2023 to attend Rice University. She was described by the university as a talented student and athlete with a bright future.
Bridget K. Gorman, Dean of Undergraduates and Trustee Professor of Sociology, said in a statement: “It is with deep sadness that I am writing to tell you that Claire Tracy, a second-year undergraduate student, passed away on Sunday.”
The statement continued: “Claire was a finance major and had close friends and a bright spirit. Our hearts go out to Claire’s family and all who knew her and are grieving her loss.”
Rice women’s soccer head coach Brian Lee also shared a tribute, writing on Instagram: “The entire Rice soccer community mourns the loss of Claire Tracy.
“Our thoughts and prayers go to Claire’s friends and family and to the many current and former teammates, whose lives were impacted by Claire’s kindness. She will forever be in our hearts.”
